OOS at UT Austin and maybe Michigan

GPA: 3.9 (weighted)
SAT: NEW-1400, 6 Essay

I live in Pennsylvania, I’m in the top 10% of my class at a competitive high school, all honors / AP courses (97% in APUSH with 4 on AP exam.) I’m the President of my school’s Model United Nations club, I joined NHS junior year and Spanish Honors society this year. Great letters of recommendation. Strong essays.

Applying “Priority” before November 1st. UT is my top choice right up with UMich (which I know is a reach and is unlikely).

If anyone wants more information I’d be happy to supply.

I’ll also be applying to Penn State, Virginia Tech and Indiana (I’ll have automatic admission at Indiana.)
What are my chances at UT and Michigan and how is my selection of schools looking? Good combination of chances?

For OOS with SAT1400, both schools are reach for you. UT admitt a very small percentage of OOS students as most seats havebeen taken by instate auto admission. For UMich, your test score is below admission average while their OOS admission rate is around 20% or less.

UT’s average SAT out of state is 1340 and they have a 27% admission rate OOS, you really think it’s a reach?

Bump

What major are you applying for at UT? If you’re going for business, it’s basically a flip of a coin

Note the student profile numbers are for enrolled freshmen, not admission, of 2016 Summer/Fall. The admission stat is always higher. In addition, the SAT stat is not reliable as there were not many students submitting new SAT score for that year yet. After all only 7% of students at UT Austin are from OOS.

Yeah I’m applying for business. I kind of came to the same conclusion, flip of a coin. Even if it is higher than the enrolled students, I’m still a healthy 60 to 70 points above it. It’ll be interesting to see the decision they make. I’m going to try to make the absolute best application I can.

Keep in mind the ‘average’ SAT scores include those of recruited athletes and other that may have a great hook but low SAT scores.

That’s another factor I’ve considered. It reminds me of my sister’s situation; she had what’s equivalent to a 1500 on the SAT and she applied to UNC thinking she’d get in easily because their average SAT was far below that. But she didn’t. She knew someone who had what was equivalent to a 1450 but who got in because she had Native American heritage. UT might also do the same and admit more minorities to help their diversity stats. However, UT is a much larger school than UNC and I have more extracurriculars and a leadership position unlike my sister. Also, I’m a boy and UT is 54% female.

The fact that you’re male won’t help you at all.

Just do your best and see what happens. But don’t be disappointed if you don’t get in - it is TOUGH for OOSers.

UT is a waste of $75. OOS admit rate is like an Ivy. An SAT of 1400 isn’t going to cut it.

OOS admit rate is 27%, most ivies are down in the low teens. I also think they consider other factors than just the SAT.

I bet there are quite a few in that 27% who are excellent athletes, though.

School rank is also very important. Top 10% is good but not excellent.

I don’t know what else you want us to tell you. It’s worth a try but tough.

Yeah, I understand. My school rank is only in the top 10% because I didn’t care about academics as much freshman year but I had steady improvement throughout sophomore year and I really stepped it up junior year. Thanks for your help everyone, MaineLonghorn is right; it’s tough but it’s worth a try so I’ll give it my best shot.

But only 7% of UT kids are OOS. UT is a school for Texas kids, OOS kids have to be tippy top students and mostly full pay. You are not a tippy top applicant. Can you pay full freight?

Out of the 7% students, image how many of them are recruited. After you subtract that pool, the regular admission rate from OOS would be far lower than 27%.

Honestly, the best way to get accepted at UT for OOS is to declare an unpopular major.

I’ve declared business and undergraduate studies as a back up. How does that sound?

I’ve heard the way to get in for OOS is special ed. You can change your major later. I don’t like the idea and wouldn’t do it, but someone I know did and he got in with a 3.5 UW and 29 ACT.
