Hey, I was wondering if you think I'd have a chance of admission at UVA. I'm a legacy and I don't live in Virginia. My SATs are 680CR/650M/670W and my ACT is 29. My GPA is 4.21W/3.6UW, I'm in the top 7% of my class at a pretty non-competitive Catholic school. I'm in all honors or AP classes - I took 1 AP in junior year and will take 2 next year. Just missed NM commended but I did get National Hispanic Scholar nomination.

My ECs are nothing special. I started a tutoring group at my school (we tutor elementary kids) and I'm in NHS and National Spanish Honor Society, too. I'm going to Boys State this summer. I did sports (swimming) in freshman and sophomore years and I might rejoin the team next year but I don't know yet. I'm not very good at it but it's fun.

I'm planning to take the SAT and ACT again after studying for them over the summer. I hope I can break 700 in CR but I don't think I'll do any better in math. I think I can break 30 on the ACT. Oh yeah, I took 2 SAT IIs and only got 630 (Lit) and 610 (USH). I'm still waiting for the Math 1 score.

I really liked everything about UVA when I visited except for the large classes. It has everything I want in a school, though. Do I have a chance?

I'd like to address the large classes issue first. What classes did you look at? If it's something like Intro to College Chemistry (a class I'm looking at) then obviously it'll be a large class. Like I said in a post before, do you really need a one on one to learn that a cell has a phospholipid bilayer with intrinsic and extrinsic proteins? No. =) The higher level classes are much smaller.

I would say.. you have a low chance of admittance unless your parents donated a library or something. ><" All numbers need to be higher, and ECs need to be stronger. How many AP courses does your school offer? Three total AP's doesn't sound very impressive I'm afraid. Sorry to be such a ray of confidence. ><"

You have a pretty good chance of getting in. You're somewhat of an average admit to UVA- it can go either way but a lot of UVA comprises of students like yourself. Maybe you want to load up on more APs if your school offers them, since UVA will like it if you take harder courseloads. You're also Hispanic, so it's an added plus to your application.

Try to get your SAT or ACT a little higher.

Focus on your ec's, especially ones with leadership position. The fact that you started a tutoring group is great. Also the Hispanic Scholar nomination is good.

If your school does not offer a lot of AP classes, that can be addressed by your gc in you app.

My school doesn't offer many APs and I've taken (or will take) all the ones that I qualify for. I'm pretty sure I can raise my SAT and ACT, too. Thanks for the encouragement. I REALLY don't want to end up at my state university!

At UVA legacy students are considered in-state; you are literally moved from the OOS pool to the in-state pool- that's a huge plus.

The midrange for overall admittance to UVA for the SAT is:
Math 620-720
Verbal 600-700

Your weighted GPA is very good and your unweighted is pretty reasonable. Your SAT's are both well into the midrange for the combined OOS and IS applicants. Plus, you have the benefit of URM status.

I'd say you have a decent shot as an in-state URM.

ok, it's been a while but since I posted the question I got my new ACT score and it went up from a 29 to a 34. How much do you think that will help considering I'm out of state? Do you think I should send my SAT II scores to UVA, since they were pretty lame? I know they're not required but "strongly recommended" means I should probably send them. I'm retaking the SAT I but I doubt if my score will go up to the equivalent of an ACT 34.

Oh, and I'm taking 3 APs instead of just 2. That should help a little, too. Like I said, my school doesn't offer that many and I took pretty much all the ones I was qualified for.

Yes, legacy helps to get into UVA. It's still a competive process. You are in the ball park, however, and it certainly is worth a try. If you like UVA, by all means apply there. Just make sure you also have some schools where you are sure to be accepted, as everyone should in this process.
