My daughter is very interested in UNC-CH...debating between UVA (in-state), UNC and Penn. For those in the know, I was wondering what chance she has for a merit based scholarship.

You really never know. I would encourage her to apply. Have her apply for the Robertson.
If she is at a Morehead Cain nominating school - have her pursue her school’s nomination. If not - there is a chance she can get pulled to be considered from the general application pool. There are other merit award amounts outside of these two full-rides as well. I think it’s worth the application fee with her stats.

Scholarships are based on teacher recommendations and essays and anything that stands out in extracurriculars. I’ve sat in the back of the room of enough info sessions to hear this from multiple admissions officers. It’s not based on grades or scores. So that’s what she should focus on to have a chance at a merit scholarship.

The Morehead and Robertson scholarships are also good to apply for although they are not connected with admissions at all.

Well that is partially true jessimo093. There are only certain nominating schools for the Morehead …and the admissions committee will sometimes refer applicants to the Morehead for consideration. Morehead contacts those kids and asks if they want to apply. I believe this to be true with Robertson as well - but I’m not positive on Robertson.

I apologize, I didn’t realize that you can only self-nominate for the Morehead if you are in state. But there are a few other nominating programs outside of schools for OOS students. However, you do not need a nomination to apply for the Robertson.

The athletics look great! However, I had similar academics, a few more extracurriculars, the exact same SAT score, and I didn’t receive a merit scholarship (from UNC). Plus I was in-state. Your daughter will have to shine via recommendations and essays.
