My D is a rising senior and William & Mary has risen to the top of her list of prospective colleges following an April visit to the campus. She attends a rural/suburban public HS about 100 miles north of NYC. She has taken the most rigorous schedule of classes possible, all honors or AP. The school only offers one AP course, however. She plans to graduate next year with 5 units/years of math (algebra, geometry, trig, pre-calculus and calc), 6 units of lab science, 5 units of French, 4.5 units of history/social studies and 4 units of English.

Other stats:

SAT I: 1440 (CR 760, M 680)
She plans to take the SAT a second time on June 2 to try to get the math score up above 700.

SAT IIs: Chemistry 730, Biology 740, US History 770

Class Rank: Not sure, but in Top 5-10% of class of 165.

ECs: Good (4 years of Jazz Band, Marching Band, Concert Band; President of Environmental Action club, Secretary of Acting Troupe, French Club)

Community Service: Peer tutoring, community rescue squad, lector and cantor at church)

D hopes to major in biology or chemistry with career aspirations in medicine or biological research, but she loves history also.

I know that W&M's selctivity is particularly tough for OOS females and would appreciate any informed opinions as to her chances of admission.

I think your daughter looks good. Being from NYS is not in her favor, though, if I'm interpreting Hudson Valley correctly. My daughter was w/l with slightly higher SATs and slightly lower GPA.

LNM -- You are correct. We are in NY but not in THAT part of NY (by which I mean the NYC metro area). D's school has few of the resources and opportunities available at the big public schools in Westchester and LI. School profile looks a lot more like those of the small towns of western NY that Gov. Spitzer termed "Appalachia." On the other hand, a classmate of D was admitted to W&M a couple years ago with (I believe) lower stats, but he was male.

Here's a link to some in-state and out-of-state admission numbers. (It's kind of annoying to have to re-select the data each time, and the lastest data is only for 2005.) 2005 W&M acceptance rates: IS=46.7%; OOS=21.9%.

Hudsonvalley, I think she stands a good chance; however, the competition for the OOS slots is fierce. Even in-staters with fabulous scores/gpa's, etc. were waitlisted or rejected. Be sure your D has a back-up school. (Last summer, W&M offered interviews w/some of their college students to rising hs seniors. Look for that program on the college's website. An interview may help if it's her first choice and she can't see herself elsewhere.)

Out of state female is the most difficult category for acceptance. My statistics are similar to yours.. I am in the top 1% of my class, many AP courses, my SAT's are slightly lower, great ECs and recommendations and I was waitlisted. I am from PA.

LBP -- D is considering scheduling an interview later this summer. Apparently summer is the only time interviews are offered, and they are with W&M seniors rather than with admissions staff. D took the SATs yesterday for the second time and is hoping for an improvement in the math score to the 720-740 range.

Class rank is a touchy issue at D's school. Honors and AP are weighted, but only slightly. The val turned down the opportunity to take accelerated math and science and has only taken one honors course in oder to play the ranking game. Several other students among the top 10 have taken the same route. But that's the cards that were dealt.

pa..person -- Did you interview? What college did you end up selecting?

Don't worry about the rank, as long as guidance report states she's in the top 10% of class. If honors and AP are only slightly weighted, admissions will realize by her rigorous course structure is a factor in rank.
Best advice I can give is to let them know her interest by the interview, if possible, and lots of contact with the school. We waited too long for many of the college campus trips. Wish we had started visits way soon!

It looks like she is doing the all the right stuff. Consider sending in audition material....especially if she maybe plays an instrument that is in demand like double reeds, low brass, etc. Best of luck

Pa person, good luck to you at Cornell which is very competitive to get into. Always bear in mind that many students who are admitted to W&M decide not to go there, anyway, and have chosen other schools. So, even if you did get in, you may have still chosen Cornell in the end.

My daughter was admitted for this coming year. She is an OOS white female. All things that hurt your chances. She took four years of all subjects-math, science, English, French and history. She had mostly honors classes and 8 AP classes. She attended a summer program at WM and the admissions people spoke with them and said they really wanted to see Calculus. They also like to see a passion for something. She also appllied ED. Good luck, it is possible to get in as an OOS female.
