Do you need financial aid? UC COA runs $50k a year for OOS, and in the low $30k range for Cal State campuses. UC tuition costs will be going up by a third in the coming year, not sure about There is highly limited aid for OOS students. Coming from Florida, that’s quite a premium to pay to go to public school. Be sure that you’re OK with the finances.

For the Cal States, if your daughter is interested in any campuses she should apply early, especially if she wants a popular campus or major.

A friend’s daughter is happily enrolled in the dance program at San Jose State.

Your daughter would easily qualify for the less competitive UCs (Riverside, Merced, Santa Cruz), but not for UCLA or Berkeley. You’ll want to look into UC’s a-g requirements and grading system and calculate your daughter’s UC GPA, which will use sophomore and junior year classes only. Since you are out of state, only the AP courses are given a bump in weighted GPA. OOS honors courses do not qualify for the bump.

Another route to consider if your daughter is set on CA is to find a residential community college with a well-established transfer program to a UC. Santa Barbara City College is probably the best known.
