OOS Chances (New High School)

After getting my most recent SAT scores, I'm trying to get an idea of where I stand. I have always loved UNC, and know that OOS admissions is extremely tough. I want to get an honest idea of my admissions chances, and some opinions on how being from a new high school affects an application. For more specifics, I am part of the 3rd graduating class of my high school, which offers almost no core AP classes (12 total, 6 in non-core subjects)

White Male from New Jersey. Planning to attend Kenan-Flagler School of Business.

GPA (after junior year): 3.8/4 UW, 4.35/4.8 W

Junior Year Courseload:2 AP's (USH and Lang/Comp), two languages (Chinese and Italian), all others are honors classes.

Senior Year Courseload: 4 AP's in-school (Calc AB, Lit/Comp, Physics, Art History) with two honors classes and one study hall (literally could not get a class in that period, so it is a "forced study hall"). I am also taking Psychology at a local community college and self-studying for Human Geography AP exam (out of own interest).

Class Rank: Top 10% of 150

SAT I: 760 M, 720 CR, 800 W (80 MC, 12 essay, so a literal perfect score)

SAT II: US History 740, Math II 800, taking one more in October

Extracurriculars:
--Cross Country, Winter Track, Spring Track: Qualified for State Championships in the 1600m junior year and 800m in freshman year, member of Sectional Championship XC Team this year also (Sectionals is all the schools within each size bracket for Central Jersey for those who don't know this format)

Recs and Essays: First rec is done and fantastic, second rec is from a teacher that I love and who is known for the best rec letters in the school.

I have already started my essays, they will be awesome. My essay thus far for the no talent prompt is particularly special to me. My second essay will most likely be the headstone engraving.

Apply for the morehead or robertson.

Seriously? I thought those only went to like 20 or so people (or at least one of them did) Which was the one that requires an application to Duke as well?

You are likely in.

Sorry to bump, but I have new things to add and a couple questions, so it’s not a pointless bump.

AP Scores: 5’s on US History and English Language
First Essay DONE! Guidance counselor has read it so far and said she thinks it’s great.

Questions:
Do grandparents count as legacies? If so, should I have him send a letter since there is no place for that on the application? (I got last year’s app in the mail somehow)

And about the “forced study hall” (see OP), should I note that I could not get a class that period on the application, or would it make that much of a difference?

Should I honestly take the ACT? As with above, would it really make a difference?

PreLives43,

I think your SAT and SAT II scores are fine, so don’t bother taking the ACT. Concentrate more on your APs and other demanding courses as well as your extracurriculars. As far as legacies go, it does not hurt to have your grandfather write a letter.

As of now, I believe you have a very strong chance, out of state admissions for large, public schools like UNC-Chapel Hill, UVA, and the UCs (Los Angeles and Berkeley) are very random, so no one could really tell you if you’re going to be accepted or waitlisted or straight out denied.

I had friends in high school with 4.9 GPA (8 APs, dual enrollment, online courses) and 31 ACT/ 1430 SAT who were wait-listed for ED and then accepted after RDs came out in April.

Best of luck man

Thanks a lot BruinsJEW, that’s kind of my whole feeling on this. I feel so weird making a chance thread, but since it is so random, I am just really nervous about all of this, and just want some kind of indicator.
