GPA: 3.81 UW, 4.5 W(not reported though)
Rank: 45/350 --> this is unweighted, no weight AT ALL to APs and Honors classes, I've took the hardest course load and all that. My school is competitive, 15-25 students to Ivies/T-20 schools each year out of ~350 students
SAT: 2260 (780M, 730CR, 750W)

Alright, with ECs I won't go into much detail, but basically I'm interest in robotics/engineering. I've spent the last two years at a university lab doing research related to robotics/CS(bulk of my time outside of school, lol). I've been published, how much does that help? Some ECs as well, such sports, clubs, but robotics has been the main focus. Will class rank kill my app?

My son attends UVA as a freshman. At orientation, UVA brought up that 93% of its students are in the top 10% and this appears to be a point of pride for them. So, OOS here looks like a bit of long shot unless your HS is truly exceptional (ie, Thomas Jefferson magnet or famous prep). You should still apply though as your other stats look good for OOS and you should likely be in the mix of those considered. Perhaps send a letter from your guidance counselor explaining the competitive nature of your school, how your school does not weight honors or ap classes, and how your curriculum was much more challenging than that taken by many of the students ranked ahead of you.

I’ve brought this up with my GC, and he assured that he would mention that everything is unweighted. Otherwise, in terms of course rigor, my course load has been similar to that of students in the past who have been accepted to UVA and its peer institutions. I wouldn’t say my school is like TJ or Stuyvesant, but it is better than the average public.
