First time posting (actually using brother's account). I have a 4.3 GPA and a 32 ACT score. I have held executive positions for ASB and Peer counseling, 3 year varsity field hockey player, many hours of community service, visit local schools to talk about my high school, great teacher recs.

What are my chances to be accepted at UNC and do I have any chance at merit aid? I am planning on majoring in journalism.

Accepted you might have a shot, I’m in state and a student here. OOS is tough to call but you have good test scores it seems. If you are accepted, it would be highly unlikely that you would get any merit aid. However chapel hill is great with need based aid if that is an option.

As indicated above, as an OSS, acceptance could be questionable. However, UNC does look at each candidate holistically, so you never know. Additionally, the topic of increasing the OSS cap from 18% to 22% is again being debated by the UNC Board of Governors for next year. If that increase was in effect this past year, it would have allowed UNC-CH to admit 204 more out-of-state students to last year’s incoming freshman class.

Given that our journalism program is top shelve, you really should give it a try. Try EA.

Each candidate is looked at individually, but I will compare your stats to mine, just to put you at ease a little bit.

GPA: Same
ACT: Mine was a 35, but you start splitting hairs above a 32 imo
Leadership: My big EC for leadership was marching band. But your leadership EC’s seem more impressive than mine.
Sports: 2 years swimming, and 2 years soccer, not at the same time. So the same level of accomplishment as 3 of one sport.
Teacher Recs: I assume they are the similarly good.
Community Service: You have a clear edge here. I had minimal community service, but I did intern with a political campaign in the fall.

Your chances at merit aid as an OOS student are honestly quite small. I didn’t receive any, but their need based aid is amazing. If there is some that you would qualify for, it can make all of the difference. It was actually cheaper for me to go OOS to UNC than to stay in-state at a similarly ranked public school.

In conclusion, you should definitely give it a try! I honestly had UNC near the bottom of my list, and basically applied just for the heck of it since I assumed I wouldn’t get in and I thought it would be too expensive. So far (I haven’t actually started yet, but I know so much more now) it looks as if UNC was my best option as an OOS student, both financially and academically.

Thanks alphaguy5…not sure how need based aid will work out. FAFSA has my families EFC really high. My family will have 3 children in college at once so I am hoping that helps.
