~Freshman year my grades were awful because i had clinical depression but my grade point average increases each year. Maybe I can write an essay asking them to throw out my freshman year grades because they aren’t a good representation of me? Also I go to the best high school in my state, maybe that will make my grades look better? The name of my school holds a TON of weight where I’m from, but I don’t know if it will in other places.~

I’m from Oklahoma, african american and female. One parent went to college and one didn’t. I’m a junior in HS so my GPA are actually only freshman and sophomore year. I have a 3.7 weighted this year and 3.3 unweighted so i don’t know how that will play in. Then my senior year grades are a mystery bc that’s next school year.

I plan to tour this summer and I’ve already sent the school and email with a few questions (I saw on an interview with an admissions person that they keep track of students who show interest by touring and corresponding via email)

I’m willing to apply early decision (I don’t know if that will make my chances better or worse??)

Hey OP! I’m a rising junior here at UNCW. I am also an AA from OOS (New Jersey). Let me say that I think you’ve got a good shot at admission. You definitely don’t have to (or rather, shouldn’t) write anything in your essay about your freshman year grades. Let your GC write about it in their rec letter, if anything. Most colleges won’t even care about freshman year grades anyways, especially since you’ve shown an upward trend since then. I had lower grades during one particular year in HS as well (sophomore year); however, a strong SAT score coupled with an upward trend helped me a lot. By the way, we have Early Action, not Early Decision. I got in via Early Action over two years ago.

May I ask what draws you to the university all the way from Oklahoma?
