OOS Chances

What does it take for an OOS applicant to make it into UCSD? My 10th grade S is very interested based on discussions with a friend who went there. What SAT scores does he need, for example? His grades right now are solid "B" unweighted. He has lot of strong extracurriculars he's been involved with for a number of years.

Thanks for any info.

Solid B's aren't going to be enough for UCSD for OOS. You basically need a 4.0+ GPA with a 1950-2000-ish SAT score to get in. On the UC scale, B's are worth 3 points while A's are worth 4. And when you said his grades are solid B's, it is very likely his GPA will be closer to 3 than a 4 on the UC GPA scale (which all UC's use to calculate). But your son can improve his UC GPA if he gets almost all A's his junior year since UC's only calculate the GPA of the student's Sophomore and Junior years of high school.

Bear in mind that UCs are not a good deal OOS money-wise.

Thank you for the honest assessment. I agree the UCs are not a good deal financially but UCSD is high on his list and would be no more expensive than a private LAC. However, I see that he'd have to do exceptionally well on the SATs plus bring up his GPA quite a lot. Definitely not a "safety" or "match" school for him!

I got in OOS and I don't think it's that bad of a deal. It's a really good school and will get your son into California, if that's a goal. (It was for me). Definitely take a lot of AP's and get those grades up. I got in with a 30 ACT/1990 SAT/4.2 UC GPA.
