OOS Chances?

I'm a rising senior. Would anyone be willing to chance me for both regular admission and honors?

Location: north of Dallas, Texas
GPA: 3.95 UW, 4.8929 W
SAT: 2220 (800 CR, 620 M, 800 W)
SAT IIs: 760 US History, 650 Lit
APs: World History (4), Biology (3), United States History (4), English Language (5). Next year, I'm taking Calc AB, Stats, English Lit, Latin, Government, and Economics.

Rank: 14/433 at a public school
Extracurriculars: many, including newspaper (coeditor 11, editor 12), National Honor Society and Latin Club. Officer in most of my organizations. Very involved with my church and do a lot of community service through church.

I've worked part time since the summer after my sophomore year.
I'm also a legacy--mom, dad's mother, both of mom's siblings--but I don't know if that counts for anything.

In, def scholars, probably honors. and probably a BK invite.

Only Mom (maybe grandmom-not sure) counts as a legacy. Aunts and Uncles or siblings do not make you a legacy. People will say that sometimes if your sibling (with a solid gpa at UMD) is there it can help you get over the hump.

The only thing that can hurt you from honors is if you are looking to go into a science field since your SAT M is closer to the scholars level.

Also remember you can’t be gemstone if you mark unwilling to work in a group project.

I would also do ED since it is not binding and you will have the answer in Feb, not April.

Very strong candidate and definitely in. I agree with everything mentioned above except for the probable B/K invite. 1420 is the average Honors SAT, so it’s likely that you’ll get a scholarship but may not be the strongest candidate for a B/K.

Now if you get that math SAT up to a 700 I think you’re very likely to get the invite.

I guess I should have been clearer…get the math SAT up! They superscore, so it is a no harm no foul!

I would think a 650M for honors humanity would position you better than 620.

We are giving opinions blind since we don’t know your Math grades. I.E. a 650 and an AP in AP Calc may not be viewed as a negative when compared to a 670 M and a B in AP Calc.

Your transcripts matter too!

Thank you all!

I am looking to major in journalism or English.

I have made As in all of my classes, except one 88 in Chemistry. My math grades have slowly creeping higher each year in high school–I was convinced in third grade that I was awful at math and couldn’t do it, and I didn’t realize, “hey, I actually am fairly good at math!” until 9th grade. My latest class, Pre-AP Pre-Cal, I made a 93 and a 92.

I have already taken the SAT twice, and I improved all of my scores the second time around. I do not know that it is possible for me to get much higher than a 620–I got that with four months of studying after taking a 5-month prep class through my school. I still have a lot of anxiety toward math in general and tend to panic on tests.

I don’t know if this changes anything, but I forgot to mention that I got a 225 on my PSAT and got the “you are continuing in the national merit program!” letter. I won’t know for sure until September, but I am fairly sure that I will be a semi-finalist.

Well, rest assured that your stats are super and you’ll have many choices when colleges decision time comes around. There’s a program at UMCP that may interest you, Honors Humanities…check it out.

TRY the ACT some kids do better on that and UMD takes the best of the 2 In other words if your ACT equals 2300, they will decide based on your ACT.

Thanks very much! Maximus, I kind of adore the Honors Humanities program.
Thanks bulletandpima, I will look into it.
