Any out of staters get both merit and grant $? I've been told that some students get both and I've been told that UConn NEVER gives both merit and need based aid to an oos student.

only grant money here.

They only give both if the student’s merit aid didn’t meet or exceed what they would have given for need-based aid. That’s the way it works at most schools - merit aid won’t be on top of need based aid, but will often allow a student to have all grants and scholarships, as opposed to a less preferential aid package which includes loans.

It’s not that they don’t give both, but those who get merit based aid usually already have more aid than they would have gotten as need-based, so they are not given more. Congratulations if you got merit aid at UConn.

Thank you!

CTScoutmom…are you sure about this as far as UConn goes? I know how aid works with regards to need, but in our state, OOS students don’t get any aid (merit or grants)other than federal loans. Do you know for sure that is not the case at UConn and that they will stack both merit and grants when there is need?

I only got my $15k merit scholarship and my federal loans. I kind of expected more, honestly, especially since OOS cost of attendance is pretty high and my EFC is pretty low.
