Hello Everybody, I was accepted into the L&S Honors Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It was my top choice, until I received my financial aid package. My EFC is 0, so I was hoping to receive a decent amount of aid, but all of the aid offered came just from the Federal level, amounting to about $10,000 (excluding loans). This would cause me to go into about $100,000 of debt by the time I graduate. With plans on attending a professional school and hopefully not living on the streets the rest of my life, this is an obscene amount of debt they are asking me to go into.

So, my question to all of you is: is there anything at all I can do? I know I could appeal, but is it not highly unlikely that they would mitigate this to a bearable amount?

I’m not sure why many don’t understand that state schools are duty bound to give most of their grants to children of their state’s tax payers. All you can do is choose an in state or other, cheaper option,

I understand that. I just found it astounding that they would accept me into the Honors Program yet still offer me absolutely nothing. Wisconsin takes in a lot of OOS students, so it’s not like I’m trying to go to a school that strictly bases its student body on in-state students.

Unfortunately, due to a personal crisis, my options of schools I could apply to was very limited. Also, my in-state school isn’t very good, so I would prefer to not attend it.

I just want to know if this is even worth appealing.

If a couple of thousand dollars would make a difference an appeal would make sense. They saw your need and did not meet it. State schools are looking for OOS students to bring in big dollars, not to give them big dollars.

So much of the aid process is confusing. I know this is disappointing, but bottom line is you’re not get to get within reach of a reasonabe loan. You need to move on.
