OOS financial aid?

posting for a SoCal friend: 3.9/34+780/740, great recs (teachers love her), average ECs.

Any chance of some cash to bring down that OOS sticker?

Is she looking for need based aid or merit aid? If she is looking for need based aid, she should run the net price calculator on the school website.

sorry, I should have been more clear: seeking merit money.

Not very likely to receive merit aid. There are 21% enrolled freshmen with GPA 4.0 from high school while ACT 34 is the 75th percentile at CoE and 1 point higher than the 75th percentile of UMich overall. I would say the chance for merit aid would be much higher at 4.0/35+.

ok, thanks billscho

I am a Michigan grad, and am not sure why a student would pay OOS for Michigan when Berkeley is an in-state option. They are often compared as schools. I personally would say in that case, the additional OOS cost wouldn’t be worth it anyway.

If one is asking a question like this, I do agree with @intparent that it does not make much sense to consider UMich. I do know students with similar stat from CA to attend UMich and are willing to pay full price though.

^^of course, but even with great stats, admission to Cal is not assured (and nor is Michigan). The top two UCs are going after OOS kids, big time at the expense of instaters. For example, there was an article in the local SoCal paper about a kid who was accepted to Brown, but rejected at Cal.

Oh, there is a CC thread going now with a video about that kid.

^ I don’t mean OP will be guaranteed to get in UCB, but OP should consider UCs in general as UMich is expensive and has limited aid to OOS students unless from a very low income family.
