I've been looking into USF for the past year and it is by far my top school. I love the atmosphere, people, academics, etc. However, the only concern I have is fitting in because I am from out of state (PA). I know its only about 2% out of state, and I'm worried everyone going to USF already knows a lot of the people since most of them come from Florida. I know that I will meet people, I am just worried I won't get as much of the college experience because I won't fit in with other florida residents. I guess my question is that do people mix well and meet lots of new people, or are there already cliques before school starts? Any info or tips would be great.

You’ll be fine. You’ll make many new friends and will fit it no problem.

Great, good to hear

you could always join organizations/clubs. Thats what I’m planning on doing to meet people since I will be a transfer that doesn’t know a soul on campus.

That’s a good idea. I heard there’s a lot of different things to get involved in

Hi lizz2152. I am having the same exact problem. USF is my top school because they gave me the best scholarship and have the program i want, but as a New Jersey Resident i am kind of worried about how OOS students fare etc. However, i have met two people from Philadelphia who are alumni and said they still loved it there and made alot of great friends. Im wondering if you have heard anything else?

there are so many high schools in FL, most of the FL students coming in don’t know that many people-- it’s not like entire high schools just up and transplant to USF, just because it’s in the same state. you’ll be fine, we are all going to be meeting new people :]

Oh that’s great to hear! I really love USF.

Gregdoubleu-I’m glad somebody else from around this area is going there! I felt like I was the only one. What’s your major?

i have the same feeling, liz are you definitely going there? and uh Physical Therapy i think

Yeah I committed earlier this week. I’m a bio major

No worries, I’m a Florida Resident, and I don’t even know more than about 1/3 of my senior class in my high school after all these years (senior class is 650+ students). Out of the about 200 seniors I know, 6 of them are going to USF with me. There won’t be a problem with fitting in, unless you have a tendency to walk around in the dead middle of winter with short sleeves on (warning: native Floridians have a freezing temperature of about 65 degrees). Then you’ll get a few stares. But in any case, even us natives are in the same boat as you guys, out of those 6 people, none of them want to be engineers like myself, so I probably won’t see them at all anyways.

This is another reason why freshman are required to live in dorms, it’s so you can meet more people and have close interactions. Also, the LLC’s group students with similar interests (majors) together, so you’ll be with people just like you. I’m not an extrovert or anything, but I still don’t have any worries about making friends.

I think you will be fine! =) Most of us “in-staters” don’t know many people going there anyway. Best of Luck!

Thanks for all the advice!

Hey I’m from NJ too and will be attending in the Fall because of the amazing scholarship they gave me. We should get an out of state group on facebook going!

hey Aessica, where at in NJ? im down by philly and i think im going there too. and i agree a fb page should definitly be made

Hey! My name’s Victoria I’m from the Boston area and I’ll be a freshman at USF next Fall. I can start a group unless somebody else has…?

I don’t think there’s a group yet…you should start it!
