Hi everyone,

I am starting to put together my list of schools to apply to/visit. I am a Va resident with a career goal of working in historic preservation/public history/urban/community planning. I have looked at some very small schools, some medium sized ones, some larger ones. I know I want a school that has great school spirit, friendly down-to-earth people and offers me a way to prepare myself for this career path. I will most likely go onto graduate school to get my master's in Historic Preservation or M. Arch with a HP emphasis.

So....in looking at NC schools, I saw that ECU has a BS in both Public History and one in Urban and Community planning. Right up my alley! Yay! Also, it seems like it has great school spirit and a community feeling. I am a pretty strong student with a 4.5 gpa, ranked 6th in my class of 340 at a very competitive, highly ranked public hs. Several leadership positions, sports, etc. I haven't received my May 5th SAT scores yet.

My questions are:

Does anyone know anything about the Public History or history programs at ECU?

How about the Urban planning program?

How hard is it for OOSers to gain admittance to the Honors College and receive merit money as an EC Scholar?

Thank you all so much for reading through this post! Have a great day!

I hope I am not being too redundant asking these questions…I had forgotten I posted about ECU awhile back in January on another forum category! Sorry about that! I wish you had longer to delete posts! :(

Don’t know anything about those specific programs. If your SAT score is good, you have a good shot at ECU Scholars. If not scholars, you could definitely be in the Honors Program. My S just graduated from ECU two weeks ago. While not a history major, he loves history and took two history classes as electives. Both profs. were very good and S enjoyed the classes immensely.

Thanks PackMom for your reply. Congrats on your son’s graduation! I was looking online this afternoon at the ECU website and saw they named 20 EC scholars. All but one was from NC, so it is going to be tough. I recognize the emphasis they put on being a NC resident. It makes sense bc of it being a state uni. I read that even if I didn’t receive that particular award, there may be others within the HC that would grant me in state tuition money I could apply to the OOS costs, so that is a plus.

I would like to visit the school sometime this summer. (I wish I more time during the school year when the campus is full of students, but it is so hard missing school, practices, etc.) Do you know of a good place to stay? I also would like to talk to some of the profs in those departments and/or the HC, but I don’t know if they would be there during the summer. Thanks again for your help!

Try the Best Western Hotel. Maybe you’ll have a school holiday(teacher workday) in the Fall so you can visit when all the students are there. You can always just skip a day :)

About OOS Honors College- there’s 100some (perhaps 125 or 150) students per grade in the Honors College- as an OOS student, you would get a scholarship which would effectively bring your costs down to those of an in-state student. Provided you are solid like you say and have an 1800+ SAT, you should be sound for the Honors College… my brother is currently a student in it and he loves it.

Thanks for the reply prunkss. I am going to go visit in a few weeks and plan on touring the HC while I am there. I am looking forward to seeing the school and hearing about the options that I may have if I were to go there! I get my second SAT scores back before then so hopefully I will have improved and will know more about my chances for being competitive for scholarships, etc. Have a nice day!

You could definently get a Scholarship because you are way ABOVE average for ECU but most ECU students are in state since it is a state school.
