I'm a Sophomore in MechE at a mid-tier UC (Univ. of California). I am thinking of applying for a transfer to Georgia Tech for Fall 2013.

Right now, my cumulative GPA is about 3.5 and my math-science is about 3.6. The application is available January 15th and so I have 1 more quarter to raise my GPA(s).
Also, I have a C in an Engineering class (AutoCAD), but I only included the class in my cumulative GPA above since it technically isn't 'Math' or 'Science'. Other than that, grades are B or above...

Do you think I'd have a shot at MechE? Online, it says the average admitted GPA was 3.55 cumulative and 3.50 math-science, but MechE is impacted. To top it off, I'm also Out of State.

Would I stand a better shot at some non-impacted engineering major, and try to change majors once at GaTech?

Also, does GaTech only consider cumulative GPA, math-science GPA, and major choice? Can one submit letters of recommendation?

Sounds like you would have a good shot. GT does admit by major in the transfer process because it’s based on how many spots are available in each major. I wouldn’t recommend banking on switching majors once you get to gt, since those major changes have to be approved and there’s no guarantee you’d be able to switch. Your best bet is to apply to ME. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the response. I also noticed GaTech requires an English II equivalent. I’m not sure what class in my university corresponds to that nor was it on the transfer course list database GaTech puts online.

Do you think two lower-division English classes will simply cut it, or would I be safer doing a lower-div English and an upper-div English class?

My university offers Comparative Literature classes in addition to English classes if that makes a difference…

The English I & II are both composition classes, such as English Composition 1 & 2. Most schools should have something very similar to those two, yours doesn’t?

It’s just that I took an Intro. to Literature class instead of a class titled Expository Writing. My school allows me to take either to fulfill a lower div writing requirement for Engineering. An upper division writing requirement called Advanced Composition is also required for Engineering students. This class accepts either the literature class or the expository writing class as a prereq.

I’d hate to jeopardize my chances of admission by selecting the wrong courses. I’m currently enrolled in some other English / Comp. Lit classes. If GaTech requires me to ONLY TAKE Expository Writing and Advanced Composition, I’d have to immediately waitlist and remake my schedule.

I was just wondering if any other transfer may have experienced this issue.
