OOS, not going to orien., choosing classes?

I'm having some trouble. I'm from OOS but won't be going to orientation (340 plus round flight? I wanna cry). therefore I'm registering for classes from colorado. the thing is that I don't know where to start! I'm going pre-med and don't know what I want to major in yet. I was thinking of taking a math class, a science class (chem?) and an english class first quarter. but I don't know what chem classes or math classes I can take, etc etc. It's just so confusing. I can't find UCLA's requirements (GEs, right?) on the website. I just don't have a general idea of what courses to take as I did in high school. I'm going to call UCLA tomorrow for some help but man, if anyone could steer me toward some webpages at ucla.edu or something to help me, that'd be mad crunk. thanks
-saif, colorado

here is a list of GEs:
<a href="http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/GE/GE-LSFr06-07.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/GE/GE-LSFr06-07.pdf</a></p>

a typical pre-med might start with life science 1, english composition 3 (if necessary), and math 3A (or whatever math level you place into). some take a chemistry 14A. or you could take any one of the GE courses if you like.

to find out what's available, go to:
<a href="http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule%5B/url%5D">www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule</a></p>

you'll register on URSA (<a href="http://www.ursa.ucla.edu)%5B/url%5D">www.ursa.ucla.edu)</a>, but i'm not sure when they'll allow you to actually register (none of the freshmen have yet because they do it during orientation)

You should definitely call them at (310) 206-6685 (Orientation Program office). Can you also find out when you're allowed to enroll for classes? I'm interested in knowing that too.

well you can start to enroll tomorrow (the 12th): the last day of the first orientation session.

thanks for the help, both of you. I've been calling departments/counselors. it kinda sucks doing this on my own with little help but whateva'.

I'm thinking of taking Eng 4HW, but it says I need to have completed an eng 3 course. I got 4s on both the AP lit and AP lang exam. do those count for eng 3?

I want to take the math 3 series as well, but I won't be able to take the diagnostic test till the 25th of september (which is when I'll be in town, since I'm not going to orientation...and I don't think I'll get a 5 on the AP calc AB exam haha). can I be confident about getting into a math 3 class that late?

I want to take the chem 14 series, which is what I should be taking I guess, to fulfill pre-med requirements...

so if I'm unable to take a math class this quarter, and I can't take eng 4HW, then...I guess I'll take some GE class. though I can't really think of one. I wanted to take a religion class but none are available for the fall quarter...I guess I'll be looking into that.

but yea, do most kids go to orientation? not going to orientation isn't too uncommon, is it? again, thank you two.
-saif

wait, so you're saying we can enroll in classes starting tomorrow if you don't go to orientation? then what's the incentive of going at all?

Really? You can enroll as soon as tomorrow? Is every one who is unable to attend orientation allowed to enrolled tomorrow?

-> English Comp 4HW
Yes. AP credit gives you the equivalent of EngComp3. What is "it" in "but it says I need to have completed an eng 3 course?"

-> Math 3
Shouldn't you have your AP scores by now? Check out <a href="http://my.ucla.edu%5B/url%5D">http://my.ucla.edu</a></p>

GE Class
Have you thought about clusters? Or fiat lux seminars?

I think most people do go to orientation as most people are in-state.

sorry, "it" refers to the schedule of classes on the site. thank you for pointing out that I can take Eng 4HW. and I had to take the AP Calc AB test on the make-up date, 2 weeks after the regular testing date, so I have not received my score as of yet.

well, you must schedule a time to sign up for classes online. I have been able to sign up for classes since 11 this morning. though I really wish I could go to orientation: you'll learn much more and have a better understanding of UCLA and classes, etc. in general.

I don't really want to take a cluster or seminar. I dunno, I feel that I'd rather take a full class instead of some seminar, to get the most benefit from a class. thanks for the help.
-saif

I can't edit my above post so...

I'm thinking of taking:
Chem 14A
Eng Comp 4HW
Life Sciences 1
Islamics 110

I guess I can drop islamics when school starts if it's too much...now I gotta make a schedule that is convenient haha.
-saif

Well, I wouldn't consider orientation a necessity to learn about UCLA classes when you've got great resources online (including this place), though maybe with a little more effort. Orientation for me was really more about the experience, the fun aspects, and getting a feel for the school -- I haven't seen much of UCLA prior to accepting the SIR.

So, regarding your situation... The most you can skip with Calc AB is Math 3A, I think. And cluster is definitely a full class. So you're all good with URSA? Did you check out the Class Planner feature on MyUCLA?

well I haven't actually started registering yet because it says on the Eng 4HW page that I need the consent of the department. how can I get that? I'm going to call them tomorrow...though no one as of yet is enrolled in the class...
though yes, it appears that I will have no problem with URSA: I've gotten to the class registration page.
