OOS on track for admission to UW?

My son is a high school junior, considering applying to UW for fall 2012. He is out of state. Stats are as follows: SAT 1930, GPA 4.0 UW, 4.33 W, will have taken 8 AP classes by time of graduation SAT II: Biology 800. Taking 2 more SAT II this June. Good EC's: varsity tennis, Heal the Bay, various clubs, Science Bowl where his team came in 6th out of 52 teams, some leadership positions in various clubs, soccer, etc. Top 5% of high school class. Still has to take ACT and hopes to take SAT one more time and raise his score.

What are his chances for admission to UW as out of state? Wants to major in Biology with emphasis in molecular biology...plans to go to graduate school for PhD possibly in genetics.

He has a great shot! In comparison with OOS students this year, he has an above average GPA and median SATs (UW doesn’t look at SAT II). The ECs sound good too.

I don’t know if you know this, but here’s some inside info. When he fills out the UW application the most important section is writing (I’m an IS student and know people who were primarily rejected for their weak writing, even though they had stellar GPA, SATs, and ECs). Be sure that the writing is reflective. There’s no clear formula for perfect writing.

You mean his essay should be well written? Do you mean the essay part of the application is very important in terms of the admission? That the admission people place a high value on the essay?
Thanks for your words of encouragement! Hopefully his SAT score will be slightly higher, but otherwise he is looking pretty good, then, yes?

All of the above you mentioned are true.

Yeah, and by 2012 the school will be hurting even more by budget cuts and so Out of States will have a better chance than in years previous. If your son continues his academic performance he has a great shot of getting in. Try to let him write his own essay and trust that he will write something that is very important to him.

Try to aim for at least like 2000 on the SAT, or try the ACT (some people find ACT easier for some reason)

He just took the ACT today. We shall see how he did in a few weeks. He did think it was easier than the SAT.

Update: Son took ACT, got composite 32. So, has 4.0 UW, 4.33 W,good EC’s, so is he on track for admission to UW? also OOS.Planning to major in molecular biology.

My son and I went to a U.W. information session where admission officers spoke and told us that the essays are often overlooked but are very, very important to the U.W. My son spent a lot of time on them and it paid off as he was admitted!

Yes, someone else posted that the essays were important to UW. Thank you for reminding me!

32 for the ACT is more than good enough
