OOS or CCC-->Transfer to in-state public

It was suggested that I repost this thread here.

Starting college Fall 2012 and am trying to narrow down my options. I was accepted to one local private LAC and deferred from one other more local one. I was also accepted to an OOS public and am waiting on a reply for an OOS private LAC. I didn't apply to any in-state publics and the time to has passed, but I want to start college this year as I have already waited a few years and want to get the show on the road.

I am considering a CA Community College and then transferring to an in-state public after a couple years there. Would this be a more viable option in terms of cost to education? It seems that no matter where I go I will be paying some hefty tuition, however I am a veteran and my Post 9-11 will cover some of that. But I wanted to know from the community if they have found that going to an OOS public or a local private for 4 years is better than attending a CC and then transferring? The in-state public I would most likely transfer to isn't as prestigious as the other colleges and universities I have applied to.

Eventhough I have educational benefits from the VA, cost is still a factor as it will not cover everything UNLESS I do go to a CC and in-state public. So would it be worth it financially to do CC for a couple years and transfer to a UC or CSU with what will be most likely no student debt at all?

It’s definitely better to go to a CCC in your case. Out of state transfers get the least priority at UC’s and no financial aid I believe. If I had to, I’d guess that it’s even harder to get into a CSU as an OOS transfer. Not to mention, it’ll be hard to determine which of your credits from your OOS school actually transfer to UC/CSUs and you might have to stay there longer than you anticipate.

Oh, I wouldn’t be transferring from the OOS college. If I attended OOS, I would plan to stay there through graduation.

In summary, should I go to a CCC and transfer to a UC/CSU or should I just go to one of the 4 year universities I have already been accepted to and finish their programs in full even though they are OOS?

Financially, you would greatly benefit from attending a community college in California and transferring. The first two years at a four-year college are primarily dedicated to fulfilling general education breadths. You could drastically cut your costs by spending those two first years at a community college.

Also, as you are a CA resident, your tuition fees for attending the four-year college after transferring would be much cheaper than what an OOS student would have to pay. Not to mention your admission chances in transferring are higher than what an OOS or international student would be subject to.
