It's interesting to see where the OOS students come from -- which schools have national draw, and which are more regional.

Since the %s obviously depend on size and population of the state, I’ve used 2010 census population #s to sort and re-group:

UVa and tech?? Not so much.

It makes no sense to compare the public schools on your list (GaTech, UMich, UVa, UCB, UCLA, UT) with the private schools. The mission of the public schools is to educate the people of their own state and therefore they have admissions policies and tuition structures to ensure that they are predominantly taking in-state students.

UVA is required to aim for a 70%/30% instate/oos ratio; I believe VT is as well. For similar reasons Cal is overwhelmingly instate at the undergraduate level, even though it certainly has an international reputation.

I’m not sure what that proves. Lot’s of privates have a large percentage of OOS students. My daughters LAC has/had 90% OOS.

For many of us our in-state publics are just as much as OOS privates with merit aid.
