OOS Questions

Hello! I'm an OOS student from Indiana and am looking into UF. I like everything I have seen so far except for two things.

1) UF has 95% of its students from Florida. Does this create a huge problem with cliques and people from high schools just sticking together? Would someone from outside of Florida be awkward at UF?
2) The student- faculty ratio at UF is something like 22-1. Is this a problem for students?

Thanks!

1) I'm an incomming freshman, but from talking to my brother I don't think that's the case at all. His group of friends does not include any of his high school friends, and none of my close friends from HS are going to be going to UF, so I'd imagine I'lle be the same way. I can't imagine you'd feel awkward at all.

I can't really answer 2, since I'm not a student yet.

1) It's not a huge problem at all. Even though the majority of its students are from Florida, you must remember that they come from all over Florida, and are just as new to the school and each other that you would be. Sure a lot of people from the same school might all come to UF, but when the freshman class is so huge, and with people endeavoring to experience the college world and make new friends, these "cliques" are basically inconsequential in the grand scheme. You wouldn't even notice.

2) Depends on what you're majoring in, I think. There are some core classes like basic English that would have about a trillion students in them, but on the whole, EVERY class isn't going to be overly huge.

Edit: Hey, I know an Emerson from Indiana . . .

emerson, my S is a freshman there from Texas. He didn't know a soul when he went, and he is having a blast. He is not the greek type, but went through rush anyway and met a lot of people, did not pledge, but has stayed friends with some of the guys. He joined the surf club and that has opened him up to all kinds of people. So, the long short is if you put yourself out there, you can meet tons of great people and they don't care where you are from.

The classes he had that were huge last semester were Calc, and chem., but the labs were smallish so he was able to ask for help when he needed it without raising his hand in front of hundreds of people.
