HI! I'm just logging on to my mom's account because I have a few questions and concerns I can't seem to find answers to. I was just accepted to UMDCP this past Thursday (as an OOS student), and I am definitely attending the school for their computer science program in the fall! I paid the $400 to hold my spot in the class, but I can't log on or register for a Directory ID to find out information about FA or anything. I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem??? Also, I come from a city in the Midwest with little diversity and where everyone knows each other. One of the things that attracted me to UMD was its' diversity, but I am concerned with being so far away from home and in a class with over 1000 kids (I come from a Catholic school with only 160 kids in my grade). Does anyone have any suggestions for ways to get involved so that UMD doesn't seem so big population wise? I was thinking about trying to write the person in charge of the CIVICUS learning community because I honestly love community service and know that I will continue to volunteer at places regardless. I know that you have to be invited into CIVICUS, but does anyone know or have heard of anyone being accepted into the house without a formal invitation??? Sorry for the lengthiness of this post, but any info would really help! Thanks so much in advance!

Hey! I’m entering as a CS major too!

Now for your ID issue try entering your info here and seeing if it helps:

I’m sorry if you’ve tried already. If you set up an ID and such today or very recently, my brother says you have to wait for the server to refresh (He works on UMD’s OIT Help Desk). Try again sometime tomorrow. If this problem is persisting, I’d try to contact said help desk. I’m sure someone there can help you through it.

As for shrinking the size of the population, clubs and sports are always options. If your going for an L&L you can try to self nominate for CP Scholars:

[College Park Scholars - Self-Nomination](http://www.scholars.umd.edu/prospective/self-nomination)

Look around the website and see if its up your alley. My brother was also in CIVICUS and he didn’t seem to like it much as far as the program was concerned but every person is different. The director of the program can be a toughie when it comes to grading and plays favorites quite a bit. Also the material covered just isn’t for everyone. Some people did enjoy it though (and it gets a nicer dorm than most freshmen get. lol). I assume you’ve done your research on it but this was just a little insight from someone who’s experienced it. Best of luck! :)

@TrAnMu thank you so much for responding! It’s nice to finally meet a fellow CS major! I think I’ll do the Scholar Self-Nomination thing. I’ve read a little bit about it and I really like what I have seen so far!

I figured out the ID issue, and everything has worked out perfectly! I’m so excited about being a part of the UMDCP Class of 2017!

Go Terps!

Congratulations and welcome to UMD! The best advice I have for you about not getting too overwhelmed is to get involved in student activities. They have a program early in the year that I think is called “First Look” where all the clubs and activities set up information booths so that incoming freshmen can explore what is available to them.

As for CIVICUS, good luck getting a response. DS emailed both the director of the program as well as the asst. director - not so much as a courtesy email back. The more he looked into it, however, the less interested he became. He is also very into community service and has served as regional VP for Community Service with BBYO.
