OOS Scholarship/Admission Chances

Hi, I’m from Las Vegas, NV. 34 ACT, multiple 5s on AP Exams, National Merit Semifinalist.

Extracurriculars include sports, volunteering, and working at Subway. I also helped start a hydroponics project at school.

I was wondering if Texas gives out significant scholarships for OOS students. I know there are honors/departmental scholarships, the Forty Acres Program, and OOS tuition waivers (which will be extremely competitive). Do these scholarships make University of Texas affordable?

If you were to receive a scholarship thru a school recognized scholarship committee( http://catalog.utexas.edu/general-information/registration-tuition-and-fees/tuition-and-fees/tuition-waivers/) your OOS tuition would be waived. As you mentioned, receiving one of these scholarships is extremely competitive. This would be a departmental scholarship. You did not mention what your intended major is. If you are going to apply to CS, Engineering or business, your chances are very slight. If you are going into a less popular major, the chances increase but the amount of money for scholarships would be less as well.

It is extremely difficult as an OOS to even get accepted to UT, let alone one of these scholarships. Apply but if you do get accepted, expect to pay the full amount.

Do you know how many IN state kids have those exact same stats and are giving zero dollars from UT? A LOT----in fact, MOST of them.

You will likely be full pay at UT unless you get one of the biggies—the 40 Acres Scholarship, etc.

Yes, I checked into OOS tuition waivers for my son after he was accepted into the engineering school. When I called the school to ask, the lady actually chuckled! She said the engineering school has only a handful of waivers TOTAL for students of any class, freshman through senior. So it’s about impossible to get a waiver.
