Hello - would any of you incoming freshman who received one of the UF Out of State Scholarships be willing to share your stats (gpa and test scores)? Hoping to get a feel for what the requirements were this year. Thanks in advance!
Out-of-State Scholarships
The UF Office of Admissions currently offers a very limited number of merit-based out of state scholarships designed to reduce the out-of-state tuition for out-of-state high-achieving students at the following levels:
Alumni Scholarship: Up to $8,000 per year (Fall/Spring, total $32,000 4 years)
Sunshine Scholarship: Up to $16,000 per year (Fall/Spring, total $64,000 4 years)
Gator Nation Scholarship: Up to $20,000 per year (Fall/Spring, total $80,000 4 years)
DS got the Gator Nation Scholarship, OOS from AZ.

5.1 weighted.

It seems that UF has drastically reduced the number of the larger (Gator Nation, Sunshine and Alumni) OOS scholarships offered. D was offered Honors and the Undergraduate Research Scholars program. The latter came with a two year, $1,000 per year scholarship; however, we were hoping for one of the larger 4-year scholarships to make UF competitive with the offer she received from our state flagship university.
We will be visiting next week (Mar. 15), so that may sway her decision; however, it will result in a big difference in final college costs.
@Searching2020 Yes, DS was really disappointed with the Honors rejection because if accepted, UF would have been his top school. I also thought that he had a good Honors app essay but I guess not good enough
Do not think UF is one of his top 5 choices but he has not said as much. Waiting on Ivy Leagues but UVA, UNC, Duke ,NC State and MIT are what I guess are his top choices . Has your son made decision?
@Gator88NE : Interesting, only 45 OOS scholarships offered in 2017 while 137 were offered in 2016. That is a 70% decrease which is significant. When do you think the 2018 statistics will come out? Looks like at this point OOS students should expect to pay the full price. If I’m digging up the correct statistic there were 3,635 out of state students accepted in 2017. Than means only 1.2% got an OOS scholarship. Very competitive!
@DesertCactusDad My S didn’t get any type of OOS scholarship and also was not accepted to Honors. I was a bit surprised, but I guess there are a lot of really great students applying. Not getting into Honors was a big thing for him as well, since he did at his other schools. Still not sure which one he will choose.
I’m not sure of his GPA with the recalculation but he’s near the top of his class of 500.
National Merit Finalist
1560 (Superscore) SAT
35 ACT
12 APs
Good ECs
I thought his essay was good, but I guess it wasn’t good enough.
I am thinking that the Benacquisto for OOS must have affected these numbers. My son is NMF and was also offered the Sunshine Scholarship. So if he goes to UF he would accept the Benacquisto, not the Sunshine. I don’t think they then redestribute the scholarship and offer to someone else. ?
For the original poster, son’s stats are 3.9+UW, 4.6W, 35 ACT, 1540 SAT, 800 SAT 2 Math, 9 AP, State math team, 4 year varsity 2 sports, captain for both, state level athlete, strong essay (we think ?)
He did not apply to Honors. Didn’t feel it offered the perks that some other honors programs offered and I also think he was at the tail end of what is a long and exhausting high school career/college application process and he didn’t have another essay in him. He would rather live in the Out of State Gator dorm.
Do out of state national merit finalists automatically get the Benacquisto Scholarship? That would cover the entire cost of attendance so you wouldn’t need the waiver, if I’m understanding it correctly?
I am truly impressed with the stats of the OOS students that replied! It’s easy to see why UF can be so selective with their scholarships when they have such a talented pool of applicants to draw from.
@Searching2020 Yes the Benacquisto Scholarship is automatic for National Merit Finalists when the student declares one of the approved Florida schools as its #1 choice.
@Torrchase Wow, your son has great schools to choose from. My son has not made a decision yet, although he is now looking at his other choices because of the UF Honors rejection. Best of luck to your son!
OOS offered Gator Nation scholarship, but also qualifies for Benacquisto. 1540 SAT, 4.6 W gpa. Also did not get accepted into Honors, which was disappointing, but he’s over it and UF is still at the top of the list at this point.
Hi there ~ My son is OOS and received the Gator Nation Award. He was not interested in applying to the Honors Program at any of the schools he applied to. We are visiting on March 15th and he has other college choices all with merit aid, but the Gator Nation puts UF as the least expensive option by quite a bit so he is already thinking that UF is where he will will spend the next 4 years and he’s excited about that. He wants Out of Stater Gators in Broward. Hopefully our trip next week is wonderful and he will be able to be done with the college acceptance stuff.
SAT 1450 (M770 and V680 and a 22 on the Essay)

13 AP classes and remaining Honors

NHS President
4 year Varsity Soccer and 4 year Club Soccer

Academic Awards
He feels very fortunate to have received this award. Why him over someone else? Some of our theories have been that UF wanted to recruit from our state. His choice of major maybe factored into it. Holistic review of his application and his essays were really good and expressed his personality. Who knows?
