OOS scholarships

I have a daughter who is very interested in GT for Aerospace or Mech Engineering.

The cost of OOS tuition is high for us though. Is there a good amount of scholarship $s for OOS? Can anyone tell me the average amt of merit aid for OOS? I don't think we'll qualify for financial need.

She's an upcoming junior. Here's what she has for stats so far:
GPA 4.0
ACT 28 (30 in math and science) Taken in Jan of soph yr. Hope to raise this some.
4 in AP Bio.
Will take 4-6 classes at Univeristy of Alabama along with several APs

The ACT score is average for GT, hopefully she can raise it, but if not is there still hope for merit aid, especially as a female going into engineering?

GT doesn’t discount tuition, unlike most/every private school and a growing number of publics. When 80% of the students get a 20% ‘scholarship’, is it really a scholarship?

So, for people looking at GT, realize that many people are paying sticker price.

Scores are nice; what are her other accomplishments?

ECs:
Mission work in Lima Peru
Biweekly volunteer at teen homeless shelter
Bass guitar player in church youth band
Church youth group
Honor Society
currently holds 3 part time jobs: nanny, deck hand on sailboat and dolphin cruise

Since I’m living in Virginia I’m not all that familiar with GT and its merit scholarships - but I do know that you may want to look at the Presidential Scholarship!

My son got it and I have to say that I’m impressed! Not only by the financial aid (scholarships of $12,500 / 25,000 / full ride) by mainly by the ‘fringe-benefits’ like extra staff for the PS (Presidential Scholars), abroad studies, co-op or internship assistance, extra activities, etc. etc.

It’s actually VERY simple to ‘apply’ for it - just make sure your application is in before Nov 1 (check the date, this was last year’s date). All details are available online.

Yes. GT has a large number of scholarships that mostly go to OOS students because GA residents attend for free (virtually all, if not all, of Tech’s GA applicants qualify for HOPE). Tech has no incentive at all to give a scholarship to someone with HOPE (to do so would just reduce the state funding of the Institute). The only exceptions would be for scholarships that had substantial non-monetary components (such as the PSP).

Merit-Based Gift: Received by 3,828 (31.9%) of undergraduates without need, average amount $5,799

The above is for all students, not for OOS (I can’t find that specific number anywhere). But keep in mind that Tech was 31.9% out of state in Fall 2009 (when that number was calculated). In-state students will either have HOPE or will have sufficiently low GPAs (below 3.0) that would make merit scholarships difficult to obtain.

Edit: In case you’re not aware, HOPE is a program for Georgia residents that allows them to attend Georgia universities for free if they meet certain requirements in high school (which are necessary for admission to GT) and maintain a certain GPA in college. HOPE is funded by the state lottery.

Thanks BanjoHitter &eml, you give me hope.

It’s great to know that GT might be an option. It sounds like such a good fit for her. She wants an urban campus, is very hard working and does best when challenged by tough teachers. She’s also very math/science based, so even if she decides to change her major, I’m sure it will be in the science fields.

hey i’m gonna be a freshman at tech this fall. i “applied” for the presidential scholarship (i’m oos) and honestly thought id get at least past the first round. but i didn’t :frowning: i read the profiles of students who have gotten the full ride and i was definitely more involved than a lot of them so i’m not sure what they’re looking for. i’ll be paying completely out of pocket hah.

Im OOS and have about a $20k EFC and I got $9k in scholarship money.

MUCH lower GPA than your daughter

I had a 3.44 GAtech calculated GPA
decent scores though 2360 Tech calculated SAT

Im sure your daughter will get a decent package because of her outstanding GPA and the fact that she is a female in Engineering

Good Luck

the PS scholarship is quite competitive, and most of the recipients i’ve met have had pretty high scores. this might be helpful [Georgia Institute of Technology :: President’s Scholarship Program :: Program History](http://www.psp.gatech.edu/stats.php) …though these are just the statistics for semifinalists…

however, i think some gatech alumni associations offer scholarships for local students.
[Georgia Tech Alumni Association :: Scholarship Contacts](http://gtalumni.org/pages/scholarshipcontacts)

good luck!

Sarah, did you see their comprehensive resumes, or just profiles?

My son has to pay OOS in total and it’s pricey for sure. Are there scholarships he could apply for, for his Sophomore year? He did apply by Nov. 1 for fall 2010 but missed out on those scholarships. He is excited and is heading to Atlanta very soon!

I’m OOS. During the financial aid process, your son probably filled out a GT scholarship application. You fill it out every year (if you want to). It enters you for institutional scholarships. I don’t know how many there are, but when I looked at the list, it looked like a lot ([Georgia Institute of Technology :: Financial Aid :: Institutional Scholarships](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid)). If you meet the qualifications (GPA, need), you might get some money.

Otherwise, there are some other outside scholarships listed on the website, but you are mostly on your own. He needs to look for outside scholarships if he wants money.

My first year I got ~6,000 in grant.
This year I got ~6,500 in grant, ~1300 in institutional scholarship, and I’m waiting on 2 $1,500 outside scholarships.

financial aid office seems to be fairly generous

I’m an OOS student and in all my 5 years here, Tech has given me at least $8k per year in OOS Grant money.

My high school grades were good, SAT was not, my Tech grades hover around a 3.0.
My EFC is ~$20k
