OOS State Looking for ONE North Carolina university

Well, I've been to North Carolina a few times for vacation and I absolutely love the geographic location, the people, the scenery, everything. Granted, I know that vacationing is a lot different than living somewhere, but I'd like to apply to one North Carolina school, and leave that option open.

Please tell me which school out of these (or others if you wish), I should apply to given my stats: 3.6 W GPA, 26 ACT (should be 28 soon), from Nebraska (VERY underrepresented), good EC's, good essay, et al. Financial aid is definitely a concern.

Schools:

UNC Chapel Hill (huge reach)
Elon
North Carolina State
Wake Forest
Davidson College

In my opinion, scratch NC State. They're stingy with aid, its size can result in red tape, and the campus is ugly.

Elon would be a match or slight reach. Wake Forest and Davidson would be reaches. UNC would be, as you said, a big reach.

I recommend Elon or Wake Forest. Although it's a reach, it might be worth applying to Davidson because they eliminated loans.

elon is a sweet school, id recommend you apply there.

I was leaning toward either Elon or Wake Forest.

Do I have a chance at getting into either?

I think you're in at elon, wake would probably be a bit more of a reach.

Thanks for the input guys - I may be wrong to assume this, but it seems like Elon and Wake Forest offer very similar atmospheres and are similarly academic rigorous.

Yeah you're right, they are very similar -- about the same size, similar greek/social life. Only difference is that Wake is probably a little more well known and known for being very rigorous but they're both great schools.

Maybe even shoot an app at Duke because not many hail from Nebraska :-)

But I think Elon is a good fit.

I might consider applying at Duke if I'm successful at bringing my ACT upwards of 30. Otherwise, despite Nebraska being underrepresented, I doubt I'd have AN chance whatsoever.

I've really growing on the idea of Elon - the only problem that I can see is that according to student reviews, it's located in a small town (whereas Wake is in a big city), with very little to do. I'm a big city person so I'm not sure if I'd be happy in that type of environment.

Elon is more on the artsy side than Wake, which leans to athletics. Elon is 2/3 female, whereas Wake is more evenly balanced (50/50). Wake also has a larger frat scene than Elon (~40% and ~25%, respectively), although the numbers of women in sororities are similar. Overall, though, the schools are more similar than different.

Elon is a mere 15-20 minutes from Greensboro, a town the size of Winston-Salem. Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh are less than an hour away.

You're probably the equivalent of 100 or so SAT points below the Wake average, but somewhat above the Elon average. If you're serious about applying to only one, Elon would probably be the one. As far as being a city person, Wake has a Winston-Salem address, but is a gated campus five miles or so north of the downtown. You'd have to get into a car to get from Wake to the city, and if you're going to have wheels, you could just as easily get from Elon to Greensboro, Durham or Chapel Hill. UNC-CH's out-of-state quota is capped at 18% by state policy, so it takes Ivy League stats to get in there OOS, unless you're a recruited athlete. If you love the Carolinas and Wake's vibe, but thought it was too much of a reach, Furman just over the line in South Carolina would be a good comparable with lower SAT levels.

You could look into UNC-Wilmington and UNC-Asheville.

Asheville is lovely.

I also agree that Elon would be a great bet.
