OOS stats

what are the avg stats OOS students should aim for if they hope to gain admission to UNC?

how about u post urs first?

haha yeah its really hard to just say what you need, post what you have so far...but basically, really good everything lol and some luck

ok, sorry. I have a 2000 SAT, 4.17/4.0 cumulative GPA, and am ranked 4/341. i have been captain of a ton of sports teams, and have over 300 hours of community service. I am president of NHS, and helped start 2 other clubs. I'm also a National Merit qualifier. I've gone to a bunch of leadership conferences in other states too. I think I'm missing something, but if I think of it later I'll add it in. Does anyone know a good SAT score for OOS? i will retake it before i apply.

For SATs, it's really hard to say. Carolina is a bit neat in that way, I really feel as if SATs just aren't the most important/the first thing they consider. When I was applying in-state I initially had a 1990 and felt self conscious about it and studied for about a week before retaking it to get a 2130. You can definitely raise your score, but it will take a little bit of work and dedication. That said, I'm not sure if it's totally necessary that you do retake it, but, hey, nothing bad will come of retaking it. Even if you make a lower score they won't care.

I had 1080 in SAT, but I applied as a transfer. I feel UNC really cares about GPA and ECs.

for OOS, i'd say around 2100 maybe. a lot of OOS-ers who post on CC who were accepted seemed to have at least that, but unc can be unpredictable when it comes to test scores, especially for those who have excellent ECs, like you do. there are OOS applicants who were waitlisted/rejected who had 2250 SATs, and there are those with lower test scores around 2050 who were accepted due to the fact that they have something special to offer. i would suggest you retake the SAT since im sure you'd improve, and improving is always good =] you just have to show them that even though your test scores arent out of this world (im talkin 2200+), you're not like all the other applicants. show them you're DIFFERENT. for my essay, i wrote about how im not the typical asian who worships math and wants to become a doctor, and that i actually want to do something in the sports journalism/media industry. so i think that gave me some points in the uniqueness factor, and i remember a UNC admissions helper telling me that they dont want a well-rounded student, they want a well-rounded CAMPUS. i wasnt amazing on paper and i was convinced i had no chance OOS, but i was accepted. anyway, hope that helped a little? sorry for rambling lol

I skimmed misstinax3's post I agree with what she has to say, UNC is big on what you can add to the campus. I'm in-state and I was accepted with the same rank as tons of people at my school who got rejected. I had a lot of community service and mission trips. So I guess just emphasize what you can contribute to unc.

yeah i agree, definitely make sure you have something different or special about you outside of the SAT scores (around 2100 at least), good grades, good EC's. these 3 things should be common in all their applicants who want to get in, but they also need something special about you that you offer to the university. if you find one, write about it in your essays, and definitely do a good job on them

Thanks so much for all of your help guys. misstinax3, do you mind telling me what your SAT scores were, just so I have an idea? I love the essay topic by the way, that was smart.

sure, heres the gist of it

ACT: 33 <--unc used this score instead of SAT (i found ACT a lot easier!)
SAT: 2130 (710 math, 690 CR, 730 writing)
SAT IIs: 780 Chinese, 660 literature, 690 us history, completely failed spanish but i really dont care because i hate spanish.

took 10 APs, got mostly A's and a few B's in them except AP Calc AB where i apparently really sucked at life and got a C. GPA was 4.0 weighted, 3.7 unweighted, so yeah nothing special thats for sure.

thank god for good essays/recs/applying early lol

thanks! that helped a lot. ok, i'll shoot for at least a 2100. hopefully that'll do!
