OOS stats

What kind of stats do you need to get admitted to UVA from OOS (CA)?

My son was applying this past year from OOS (Coronado, CA, near San Diego), so I've been carefully watching the stats on other OOS kids for the last two years.

Generally, the GPA, rigor of classes, and class rank (i.e. the transcript) seem to carry more weight with UVA than SAT or ACT scores - although SAT scores need to be in the window. Having said that, admitted OOS students usually have strong scores, and an UW GPA close to 3.9 or above (weighted GPA's vary so much from school to school that it's hard to generalize about those). They usually have a class rank in the top 5-7%, and have taken many - if not all - honors and AP classes. Those, of course, are just the numbers. Lots of other things like EC's, recs, and essays all come into play...and the quality of those is very difficult for any of us to judge here. The admissions officers are probably the only ones who could tell you exactly what they're looking for in those areas...

As far as the numbers go, there are always exceptions, meaning it's hard to know exactly what you need to get in a particular school. The college admissions process is not always consistent, nor predictable, so consider applying to any school you're seriously interested in - assuming you're somewhere within the window for admission.

My son applied to UVa last year, was accepted, and will be starting there in the fall. If you want his specific stats, PM me. I'd be happy to give them to you.
