A2Wolves6, I'm at UF right now and would say your chances are good. It seems that all the OOS students here actually have lower stats than the in-states, possibly as a push for the school to have more diversity. Two of my friends are OOSs with <1180 SAT and <3.5 GPA, and only mediocre ECs.

Gainesville might be the crappiest town in Florida. State College, PA and Ann Arbor are thousands of times better.

Why does everyone hate Gainesville so much? I mean, it can't be that bad considering they have Ben Hill Griffin Stadium!!!

I remember going there when I was young, seeing the UF banners on the lightposts, except the first thing I thought was "oh geez, who would want to go here, it's so hot!" LOL!

I can only say that my S is having a ball there. He was worried when he was moving from a big city to Gainesville that there would not be enough going on in the town to have the kind of social life he was used to. But, he has found that the music scene is good, the clubs are fun, and the restaurants are varied and plentiful. He has joined the surfing club at UF and goes to both coasts to pursue this passion at least twice a week. All in all, he is loving it far more than he thought he would. (I hope he is studying some though)

gainesvile is a college town. nothing more, nothing lesss.

just 50K+ kids in one large town basically.

Okay, okay, okay. Wow. The only other place I've seen so much meaningless bickering over something at UF is on a UF MySpace group (which is really pathetic sometimes).

Gainesville is NOT in the middle of nowhere. There is PLENTY to do here. At any given time of the day/night, you can find something to do. And worse comes to worse - you either 1) Go to Denny's on 13th/University because they're always open and have funny waiters at like 2am OR 2) to go the stadium, get in the middle of the field, lay down, and look at the stars. Also, Ocala (which is only HALF hick-country btw), and Jacksonville are not that far away either. There are bus services that you can use at a very low cost that will take you almost anywhere in the state. For example, my room mate goes to Miami for $40 roundtrip.

As far as admissions, yes it is quite competitive. However, just because you have the scores to be in the Honors Program does not mean you will make it into UF. I have a friend who's girlfriend was qualified to be in the Honors Program, but was rejected by UF. UF wants well-rounded people, with above average academics. I had a 3.8 GPA, 4 AP classes, and I didn't have an outstanding SAT score..I only had an 1150, but I had a bunch of extra-curriculars such as band, NHS, community service, and other clubs that contributed to my successful admission. So don't fret TOO much over not having top scores or anything. They look at the whole package. Although, I have heard that OOS have less of a chance of getting in, but that hasn't stopped me from meeting a TON of out of state students here.

And no there is no pre-med, pre-vet, pre-law, pre-dent..or anything like that. ask anyone who goes to school here.

and thats my $.02

njgatorgirl, my son has also said that going to the Swamp in the middle of the night is a really cool experience. He called one morning and said that the night before he and a friend went there at around 1 am and sat around talking for a couple of hours. He said it was awesome to be at the center of this huge stadium that can be so raucous and loud and have it be totally silent and peaceful.

it most certainly is. you never realize how large, the stadium is, but how small the field is until you are right in the middle of it. it's a great thing to do in the wee hours of the morning. its peaceful and calm, unlike on saturday afternoons. =)

What's this whole misconception(sp?) of UF being really really hard to get into? I'm not saying it's easy, but it's definitely no UNC or UVa. Two kids in a school near mine got into UF last year (out of state-connecticut) with alot lower scores and grades than what you guys are mentioning. One got in with an 1100 and a 2.8 GPA, the other got in with an 1160 and a 3.2. I'm not sure what their extracurrics/essays/recs were, but nevertheless they got in with scores below 1400 and GPA's below 4.0. A third kid from that school applied to UF and got rejected.....well, he had a a 910 SAT and a 3.137 GPA...no surprise there. The year before that though, a kid got rejected with an 1160 and a 3.1 GPA. UF's definitely tricky to get into, but it's still not like UNC, UMich, or UVa where out of state students absolutely NEED a 1400 or so.

you've certainly relieved me a bit yaronb17..

i'm in state.. 3.5gpa dont know what my sat score is yet (took it on saturday) black male, "ok" ECs (not 400 hours of x and 200 hours of z, etc)

but if OOS can get in with those grades..

There is always anecdotal evidence about any school about certain kids getting in....statistically, that is meaningless. Here is a link to UF's common data set which the OP can use to judge his chances:
