I’am an applicant for UT Austin (From OOS). I doubt if I will get in because reading previous forms most people with good stats could not even get in. So in that case I ask IF yalls form Out-Of-State. Post your stats for everyone to look at so they and I could get an idea of what we need to give us a chance (yes a chance not even direct ) to get into Austin. It can be any program or any major, I’m geared more toward engineering as well as psychology (science), but the schools is a lot tougher to get into than there is the “major” part.
P.S. tell me more on how admissions for texas works for out of state than instate (Sorry Texans ) Like is class rank considered or Letters of rec or what is?
Rank is one of the most important aspects. Through the evaluation process, one of the things they do is create your predicted GPA from your current rank and perhaps test scores. Thats one side of the equation. The other part is the holistic approach, where they take into account literally everything.
Not necessarily. Rank is just part of the equation. Having added three new short answers, I believe UT is trying to do an even bigger holistic approach. UT does not not just want straight As.
@ComplexX yeah I’am in the top 42% from out of state but I have a 34 on the ACT as well as 1 or 2 good letters of recomendation. I’m going for engineering so i hope its works fine
It’s too competitive to post meaningful stats. The only people getting in to Engineering from out of state are those who decided on this major years ago, a reason to attend UT, exemplary rank and test scores, use capitalization appropriately… or have something truly special in their history that would make it a crime not to accept them.
@rahgax2 what if they had a letter of rec form a college professor in the engineering department (but from a different school) but still showed research interest?
@ComplexX Yeah I know him very well, He was my mentor in the summer, He taught me lab work and research. Like he taught me the tools used in electrical/computer engineering as well as he put me in his students research project. He is currently teaching me hot to design my own circuit board to used in my senior project.

Wrote the long essay about my dad’s poor roots in alabama and breaking his family cycle then my family’s spontaneity and traveling
Wrote short answers about wanting a career in data science (combining math with public policy), how my transcript couldn’t tell you all the amazing experiences I’ve had outside of the classroom (told specific story about a cow escaping onto the interstate while I was traveling cross country with my family), and I wrote about how debate has changed my life (I was really shy but doing debate made me confident)
For OOS engineering, they will look less at class rank–that’s really only for auto-admit for in-state admissions–and much more at your math scores and grades (SAT/ACT math, SAT Math2), as well as the holistic side which might want to include engineering-related (i.e. robotics or the like). You’ll need to have superior scores in math and mostly other areas to get a shot at the 10% of spots available for OOS students. Good luck!
@EngPII Thank you so much, I hope it does go well as i’m trying. I didn’t know they except the sat subject math lvl 2 i’am taking for MIT mainly but wow.
I have a HS junior who has started talking about U of T. How is it socially for OOS students? (We’re from outside of Boston.) Any thoughts/comments appreciated. Thank you.
