Do you think I should retake it in December? I’d be up for paying the late registration fee, but what score will guarantee/almost guarantee the waiver? Also, if I note that I will be sending in later scores will they later reconsider me for the waiver or is it pointless?
@ally22 The full tuition waiver scholarship is not awarded to many so if that is something you really need/want, I would definitely consider taking the SAT again. I am unsure of the exact score needed, but sending in scores later will still qualify you.
If you are a senior and haven’t prepped for the ACT at all, I would stick to the SAT as you don’t have many opportunities left to improve your SAT, etc. If you’re a junior, go for it! But, I would focus on the SAT and really try and improve your score!
@JPGator98 I’m actually a senior, running out of time haha. I wish I would’ve looked into FSU sooner–it caught my eye when I saw OOS tuition waiver and the cheap tuition and as I kept looking at the school I’ve become obsessed with it! Do you have any idea how many waivers they give out?
My son got the OOS waiver 2 years ago. His ranking and average were very good, but not as high as yours, but his SAT was 2150 under the old regime. I spoke to the admissions office about my second son, who is now a senior, and his SAT is 1330. The advise they gave is that they don’t know how they will process the new SATs, so they said to wait until we see if he gets it in December, and if not, they will be able to advise what the cut off is at that point. Then he can take the SAT to improve, if that’s necessary. By the way, my son loves FSU, and they try to bring OOS students into the fold.
@newtownunit thank you! I actually didn’t get to apply early so I won’t be able to find out in december in time to retake it…still not sure what I should do!
If you haven’t yet applied then won’t your cutoff for scores be a bit later? If you can still take the tests I’d take both SAT and the ACT, thjey’re not THAT different (you do need to know math formulas for the ACT) and be aware that ACT is a little time pressured. Don’t worry about the “science” section, it’s really just reading with graphs.
You should visit the campus it’s gorgeous! And they do a great job with their tour/information sessions. We saw it last summer in the rain, and that didn’t detract from the experience at all.
Based on the discussions I had with FSU when my older son was applying (he’s now a sophpmore), the cut off for the OOS was about 1900 under the old system, which was about the 90th percentile. My older son’s score of 2150 was the 96th percentile, and he got hte waiver. My younger son, who expects to hear round December 8 of this year has a 1330 on the rSAT, pretty much the same as yours, which is about the 90-91st percentile. So, I’ll let you know how it goes, and if he doesn’t get it I’ll post it. At that point we should know the cut off. I don’t know how anxious he’ll be to take the test again. Unfortunately our kids really got tortured by the college boards with the change of exams. It injected a lot of inconvenient and uncertainty at such an important time.
I spoke to admissions. They’re not sure what the cut off will be, but if you are admitted in December they will know the cut off at that point. If you are shy of the number, they will allow you take the SAT/ACT again to try to make it, and then give you the OOS if you qualify.
