Hey everyone! Just a quick question, I’m an OOS admitted student at Ohio State and I heard from my cousins, uncles, aunts, etc. that first year students are required to pay the OOS surcharge and then the remaining years you are considered an in-state student. Is this true? They all attended OSU but this was a while back, and I know OSU has made many changes since then. I’d really appreciate a response, as I can’t reach the Undergraduate Admissions office because they’re closed today. Thanks so much! :)

If that was true, I would be extremely happy since I’m OOS and hoping to attend, but unfortunately, I believe you pay OOS tuition every year.

The way it works is that if you live in Ohio for a year you are considered a resident, and therefore pay the in-state tuition. However, you have to be living OFF campus. So you would have to find an apartment or something in Columbus and live there for a year. Idk about you, but I don’t think it would be worth it… living on campus is probably a big part of the experience.

Simply living off-campus for a year does NOT remove you from the OOS ranks.

Here is a helpful link to the general rules on OOS people gaining in state residency.

Definitely not true! My D is an OOS sophomore. Not only do you have to live in Ohio for a certain period of time, you also have to have a certain income to gain in-state status.

How much income do you need? Anybody who has ever successfully become a resident?

I think its around $5000 or $6000. You need to double check.

Ok thanks. I’m not really sure I want to do this but if I were going to vet school I’d rather go to OSU. But you really have to be resident for that. OOS vet students pay almost $60,000 a year in tuition.

1- that rumor is not true; my DD is OOS and that is how I know

2- OSU - like most state schools - have a process for determing when someone is an in-state resident … that process will determine nhwo you qualify for in-state residency

3- if that’s what you want to do - pay in-state tuition by becoming an Ohio resident - ou may have to configure your life to do so; that’s not hard to do, but it may conflict wqit what you think your future will be; as I recall it includes taking a year off :-)

Good luck!!!
