OOS tuition

I heard from someone that if qualified sometimes Ohio State will offer in-state tuition for an OOS candidate. My son is a rising Senior from New Jersey, 3.96gpa, 1950 SAT (720) Math interested in engineering. EC’s include 2 years wind symphony, captain of soccer team and much club soccer. He has also been working after school since sophmore year. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Yes it’s true! We are from MA and our 3rd son is a freshman at OSU this year (all 3 boys went/go there). It’s called the National Buckeye Scholarship:

National Buckeye Scholarship for non-Ohio residents
Award amount
$12,000 ($48,000 four–year value)

Criteria
Ohio State is committed to enrolling a diverse and talented student population. The National Buckeye Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to non-Ohio students required to pay the out-of-state surcharge who are admitted to the Columbus campus for autumn semester. Those considered rank in the top 40 percent of their graduating classes and have ACT composite scores of 28 or higher or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1260 or higher.

Notes:
Except where noted, the National Buckeye Scholarship can be combined with any other merit scholarships, as long as the combined total does not exceed the total cost of an Ohio State education.
This award is renewable for a maximum of eight semesters (or the equivalent) of full-time undergraduate enrollment, provided the recipient maintains a 2.5 or higher GPA (earned by no later than the end of the first year) and is required to pay the out-of-state surcharge.

As long as you have the SAT or ACT score mentioned above AND apply early (Nov 1) you get this merit award. Son was also given the Trustees Scholarship, which was another $2000 per year. He (actually we) end up paying about $800 more per semester than in-state students!

Here’s the OSU Scholarship link: Scholarships

My oldest and youngest both received both of these scholarships; unfortunately my middle son isn’t strong in standardized tests and missed the SAT requirement by 40 points, so we pay the full OOS tuition for him. And it really hurts!

Good luck!

Our son, also a freshman this year, received it, as we are OOS! It’s a great scholarship, and it also made his decision to attend OSU that much easier. Bearvet-we are also from MA…it’s good to know that there are other New Englanders’ there, never mind MA!!! Most everyone we met at orientation and move in day was either from Ohio or the Midwest/central area.

That is a great option to consider. I think he would qualify. I also heard that traveling is not that bad because of proximity to the airport. He liked the details of the engineering program and also the virtual tour. Unfortunately we won’t get out to see the school until hopefully after we is admitted. His grandfather went to Michigan but I will leave that off of the application :)

What if you are in top 10% 25 act can this apply since your rank is a lot higher

I was in the top 10% and had an ACT score of 27 and didn’t get it :/

You must meet both criteria: top 40% of graduating class AND 28 ACT or 1260 SAT. It’s also important to apply by the priority deadline which is Nov. 1.

@Soccerdad23 - if we couldn’t travel to visit a college before applying, I told the boys to apply and if they were admitted and still had a strong interest, then we’d plan to go visit. OSU is an amazing school - beautiful grounds and buildings (RPAC rec center, Ohio Union, Library) and the immediate surrounding area has everything a college student could ask for (we’ve visited many colleges and haven’t found this anywhere) and downtown Columbus is very accessible - please be sure to visit!

@tedysmom - We’re in western MA - where are you? All of the kids from the midwest are convinced we eat lobster every day LOL.

Haa…lobster EVERY day…wouldn’t that be nice  or should we say “lobstah” We are on the east…northshore area of Boston. Also, Bearvet, did your boys ever attend any of the Buckeyes and Beyond events? There is a reception coming up in a couple of weeks for the New England area students, I am just curious to see how many there are. Hope my son decides to go.

Is Buckeye scholarship available to internationals?
