It’s clear that OOS tuition is significantly greater than in-state. I was recently admitted to the University of Washington Class of 2020 and I am a resident of California. The UW is my first-choice university and I have made that clear on my FAFSA 2016-2017 application. Is there any hope for me to get a sufficient amount of financial aid? My mother is a widowed parent of three and she barely makes as much as my OOS tuition per year. I’d just like to hear from other OOS students and their experiences with tuition and financial aid, specifically with the UW. Thank you!
No you won’t. As an OOS student you are pretty much limited to a $5500 loan (and a Pell Grant if you are extermely low income). Hopefully you applied in-state so you can use your Cal Grant.
No.
Why do you think UW charges high OOS tuition?? They charge high OOS tuition because your family doesn’t pay taxes there.
Would it make sense for them to charge high OOS tuition…and then have to give you a ton more aid??? NO.
You have an ACT 21, so you won’t get merit.
Where else were you accepted? Did you apply to any Test-Optional schools since you have a high GPA?
My dd applied to UW in 2012 from California.
She was a high merit student. She did received some grants but it just wasn’t enough to cover her OOS tuition and fees to UW. We’re not low income, but even with the merit awards, we would have had to shell out an additional 30K per year.
I don’t think they participated in WUE at that time because they had too many students who wanted to attend. We were told that WUE applies to some of those schools (mostly LACs) who don’t get the big numbers of applicants. Also, WUE applicants were allowed something like 5 spaces.
So, you can ask, but OOS students are typically out of luck when applying to state-funded public schools who rely on the taxes of local residents.
UW is not a WUE school. They do give some merit scholarships to OOS students. http://depts.washington.edu/uwhonors/scholarships/freshman/ They don’t go to many students.
^^ Yes, they give some merit, but this student has an ACT 21.
