Oos

I was wondering why Berkeley has a low OOS population compared to places like UVA and UMICH considering UCB is arguably the the top public school in the country. Is it just that much more particular towards its own residents?

I ask because I want to apply OOS. Believe it or not (after weeks of researching) this is the school that has interested me most.

i'm an out of state student that will be attending uc berkeley next year and honestly i don't really know why berkeley has such a low percentage of out of state students. i would guess that compared to uva and umich berkeley receives many more applications from in state students not only because california is bigger than michigan and virginia but because many of the top students in california know that berkeley is the top public school in the nation and it's a huge bargain if they can get this top notch education for such an affordable price.

Let me ask you something: What attracted you to Berkeley?
and Did you visit?

It's state law that UCs must admit a certain percentage of students from in-state. Berkeley doesn't really have a choice in the matter.

1) Berkeley is extremely selective of its OOS students--it's much like Ivy admissions.
2) It does not give much aid too OOSers. There are enough in-state students to support; OOSers can get some aid (sometimes a full scholarship), but mostly they get no money.

"...it's a huge bargain if they can get this top notch education for such an affordable price."

wrong. berkeley costs just as much as, if not more than, private schools for oos students. only the in-state kids get the good price (which, i must say, is an incredibly low price when compared even to other public schools).

and as kyledavid80 said, OOsers get barely any aid. i'm a very low-income ooser and am paying over $25,000 in loans every year (it was a little lower this past school year but the budget cuts hiked it up for next year, and i'm guessing it'll only get worse)

maybe if you read the whole sentence you'd know i was referring to in state residents

d=], do you think it was worth it despite the loans?

@DukeBlueDevils: chill man you sound offended when i had no intention of being offensive. my bad for not reading your post thoroughly

@9854: right now to be honest, no. but maybe- if years from now my berkeley degree makes me more than enough money to easily pay off the loans- my opinion will change.

^^ tbh, I don't know why you would choose to go to Berkeley if you'd have to take out $100k in loans.

hey man it's all my parents...i was fine with going to any one of the lesser known schools i got into that gave me a full ride
