open curriculum

what is open curriculum? sorry for the dumb question. Does that mean no core classes? if so what colleges are open curriculum?

-Thanks

just curious

“Open curriculum” typically refers to the absence of general education or core curriculum requirements.

An example would be the BA degree at Evergreen State.

It’s not a dumb question because different schools have different definitions of open curriculum. The Evergreen State curriculum appears to be a true, no strings attached, open curriculum.

Amherst, Brown, and Grinnell have open curricula but you may still have to take a freshman seminar and fulfill required classes for your major. There may be other restrictions like you can’t take more than X semester hours of credit in any one area.

Human nature being what it is, people who go to a college that offers an open curriculum will often tell you that another college’s interpretation of the term is somehow not right.
