Open heart surgery

My IB Biology class is going on a field trip to see open heart surgery later this year, and to be honest I'm a little bit nervous... It sounds like an amazing opportunity, but I'm afraid that I'll throw up or something. Has anyone else here done this? Do you think it'll be ok?

Throwing up isn't what usually happens. You may be vulnerable to a VAGAL Response.......fainting.

^Wouldn't want that to happen either. :o

thats what happened to some kid in 9th grade bio. teacher was lecturing about the p.e.n.i.s (mod might delete it) and he fainted. had to go to the nurse. next day everyone laughed at him. we still talk about it today.

That sounds like a cool field trip tbh :)

A girl in my health class fainted because the teacher mentioned blood and needles. She had to sit on the couch from then on.

surfed_pipeline, that's really funny.

I did feel a bit lightheaded when the teacher described the surgery in class, but I thought that was just lack of sleep. It's such an incredible opportunity that I really don't want to miss it... I really hope it won't be a problem.

well it's not like you're going to be standing next to the surgeons looking over the body, so if you pass out or something, it wont be a HUGE deal. (I dont know, maybe you knew that already) Hopefully more than one adult will be chaperoning you, so one will stay with the rest of your classmates while the other goes to get a doctor (won't take long, you're already at the hospital)

Its not that bad, my dad works for a company that makes artificial heart valves so I've watched several procedures, the only real bad part is the way they crack the ribs open and pull them out of the way.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess the only way I'll find out is if I go, and if I do pass out, well, I'll deal with that then.

and get laughed at later on but that doesnt matter does it?

I'd probably laugh, too. It'd be a good story.

We watched a videotaped birth in class when I was younger. I know it doesn't really make sense, but I did feel somewhat nauseated - I went to the bathroom for a few minutes.

try to watch a couple videos...if you go on yahoo or google or something video search, im sure they have a couple open hearts to use to "practice" watch before seeing it live

retractable: thats basically watching porn

im talking about for an open heart surgery not a birth you moron

^And either way there's really nothing arousing about a birth. The video we watched in 9th grade biology made that clear.

Ditch and go ask that guy out....hahaha

Now that's an idea... :D

You will know if you are going to faint......you will lose your peripheral vision, your hearing will decrease, you will feel sweaty and that is your cue to sit down or drop your head down toward your lap. You can prevent the passing out portion if you do the sit down or head drop when you notice that your are feeling sweaty....it is not that big of a deal. Don't attempt to remain standing or walk away......get your head low by either stooping down and putting your head toward your knees or sitting in a chair w/ your head tipped down. Good luck and don't worry......
