@SDSU69 Congrats on your acceptance! Please update us with your take on it. I’m betting you’ll love it!

I’m taking Friday off from school to attend the Admitted Students Preview Day. I’m very excited to see the surrounding area and tour the campus with my mom. I’m hoping my future school is as beautiful as I’ve heard it is. Hope to see all you there, enjoy your time and drive safe (if commuting).

Today it was warm and sunny on campus. It should be nice for admitted students day. We had a few days of heavy rain about a month ago so the hillsides are greening up nicely.

Here is a panorama I snapped today in Poly Canyon. Be sure to take the quick 1/2 mile hike out there if you get the time, or hike up to the poly P. It’s definitely worth the time!

About Friday’s Admitted Students Day: the computer science presentation was great. After hearing about the department, I was struck by the great faculty in CSC. You could just teach the same old classes year after year or you could use students to help you with your research project. At Cal Poly, the faculty get interested in the latest topics and develop new courses for their students. It’s a lot of work to start a new class in an area never before taught at Cal Poly, but they do it because that’s something they want to do for their students. The number of and the different kinds of courses offered were really amazing. The only disappointment with Friday was that information was given to the audience and there was no time to interact with students. But I left so impressed with the department’s faculty and students.

At Saturday’s Open House, we went to the Computer & Electrical Engineering Showcase that highlighted their respective clubs. There is where we got a chance to talk directly with students. I had so many questions about the university and department, and those students didn’t seem to mind answering non-club questions. I left with a good feeling that students were very friendly and wanted to work together (vs be in a cutthroat environment). Friday and Saturday reaffirmed that Cal Poly was the best choice.

@eduparent I was in the CSC presentation as well! ( The asian looking guy on the 5th row towards the right)

I really enjoyed the talk as well, especially the professor with his music and sorts. Did your daughter/son attend the ignite talk as well?

We came away from this weekend very excited and impressed with everything we saw at Cal Poly, most noticeably how friendly and nice all the students, administrators and professors seemed to be! We attended the meeting of students admitted to the CLA (college of liberal arts) and then we broke off into groups by major. Having come from a big state U myself, I was surprised to realize that there are basically no TA’s at CP…all the classes are taught by professors, We saw the president of the campus speak several times and he did a Q&A with parents on Friday and he seemed very accessible and forthcoming as well. The message reiterated over and over was that of “learn by doing”, focus on student success and they take their mission statement “The Mustang Way” very seriously. The open house portion on Saturday with all the clubs and student groups showcased was super fun too. And of course, the gorgeous weather and the green hills really cinched the deal!

My son, who graduated last June, drove down to Cal Poly last weekend for the Open House. He participated in the robotics contest in Mott Gym. It was just for fun, his group built a robot in 24 hours. If building a robot in 24 hours is your idea of fun, then Cal Poly is one of the best places in California to do it.

yengkerng: we attended Ignite but left a bit early; what did you think of it? From your posts, it’s wonderful to see how excited you are about going to Cal Poly. S was impressed with Open House but he’ll get more excited about Cal Poly once the AP tests and high school are out of the way.

@eduparent: I think the ignite talk varies from good to somewhat boring to great, but the whole notion of having such a talk is really what impressed me. Having the professors and student talk about random things really reinforces the fact that we’re all human, and I believe that the personalization aspect brought out by this ignite talk works wonder for both the students and professors in the department.

I am truly excited to come to Cal Poly and the untied states in general. Coming from a foreign country, the opportunities and freedom of the american education system really makes it such a unique privilege. You will begin to appreciate the values of american education system once you look at the other systems out there, and is exactly why an american degree is so highly regarded overseas. And getting one such degree from a place like Calpoly? That’s a dream to many, and certainly to me.
