Hi all! Son (HS senior) has become very interested in UofR and I agree that it looks like it might be a great fit. Unfortunately, none of the open house dates will work with our schedules. We are leaning toward applying sight unseen and interviewing with our local rep. If son gets accepted, then tour in the spring (maybe if they have an accepted students weekend?).

Do you think this would be okay? Any reason UofR would deny him based on not visiting beforehand? Also, is the regular tour pretty inclusive? I imagine it wouldnt be as full as an open house, but will he see his major buildings, library, student center, a real dorm room, eat the food?

Anything you can add that I havent thought of?

If he gets in, he can come on an admitted student thing and stay in the dorms, etc. You can come and meet all the various offices - advising, etc. - in a much less crowded atmosphere than when everyone arrives in the fall. They have a series of presentations for parents.

We did this and dropped off the deposit on the way out.

That’s exactly what my d did as well. She did an overnight during Accepted Students week (during an April ice storm!), decided on UR and enjoyed it, still keeping in touch with kids she went to school with.

Thank you! I didnt realize this was the norm. I was under the impression that you toured, then decided to apply or not. He has decided to go ahead and apply when the supplement is up and if he gets accepted, to visit in the spring. UofR seems to be very unique. I am glad it was suggested to us. :)

What I do want to point out is that if you think your son will apply as Priority decision, which is really just early action, you will want him to have his interview done before Dec 1 or there abouts so it can be considered in UR’s evaluation process.

My son had an interview set up for Jan, but when I realized he could apply Priority decision, I moved his interview up to Dec based on info the UR rep gave me on this board.
