Hi! I was wondering, does it get annoying being surrounded mostly by girls all the time? Is it easy to adjust to? How do you escape the estrogen?

Hi Hungry Student! I was wondering is the campus life really as bad as you have previously stated?

Thanks Hungrystudent, I got in for Advertising and Marketing, I am so happy, just thought I would let you know.

You mentioned a lot about the general population of the FMM students which confirmed my initial fears of attending FIT. I was just admitted to the one-year AAS FMM program and I was just wondering what your impression is of these students? I have always wanted to enter the fashion industry and this was my way of getting my “foot-in-the-door” into it, but I’m concerned with how these students are generally perceived and how well they typically do after graduating. I will also be entering FIT as a graduate of a pretty renowned university, so I’m hoping that this will set me apart from the “ditzy” crowd of the FMM majors…

Lemme just say congrats to all of the recently admitted students and I hope to see lots of you at the admitted students day this weekend!

Yeah…as a dude, people think coming here is the greatest thing in the world, but in actuality, it pretty much sucks. Girls will almost instantly assume your gay unless you give them reason to think otherwise, and your chances with anyone from school is pretty much nonexistent. Which brings me to my next point; You’re probably not going to be interested in dating much of the FIT crowd, who tend to not exactly be fantastic individuals.

It’s commonly accepted that one of the worst things about FIT is the student body, who as a whole, are generally unfriendly and don’t want to do much besides shop and go to exclusive clubs they normally could not afford. It’s best said that people don’t come to FIT to make friends. Every girl here is trying to live out her own sex and the city fantasy, and most of them don’t include being a decent person, unfortunately. It is tough to adjust to, and honestly I miss having real dudes around. Getting away from it, for me at least, means visiting my normal friends that go to actual colleges with grass and stuff. It’s not exactly an ideal situation, but it’s something you give up to have the opportunities available. I really do caution straight guys to think long and hard about what kind of impact going to FIT will have on their social lives just because honestly, you do get tired of doing girl-stuff every week.

62

In a nutshell; yeah. There’s very few level-headed people here compared to other schools, and I had to adjust from having a decent amount of friends to just 4 or 5 people I really talk to. At first I thought I was having issues before I realized that’s just kind of how everyone is around here. It’s very much like high-school the way everyone tries to be snobbish, because that’s kind of how the industry most of these people are trying to get into works. Compared to other colleges, we have significantly less people happy with their personal and social lives. You can tell right away if it’s going to work for you or not.

63

Congratulations! I hope I get a chance to see you around campus sometime this weekend or next year.

I have a friend in the one-year for AMC, and she says the students are better than the girls fresh out of the Long Island high schools. You can distance yourself pretty easily and the professors and faculty will take note if you can find some of the better ones. If you do well, finding a job should be easy because you’re probably mature enough to have the life skills they find acceptable for it. One thing FIT does have is connections, so it shouldn’t be difficult to locate something, and most employers know to base judgement on character rather than the name in this particular case.

I was also wondering what the Honors Program at FIT is like? I’ve read about it on the website but I wanted to know from a students perspective if you have any experience of it.

I’m a junior in high school and I want to major in fashion design. Right now FIT is my number one choice. My parents don’t have a lot of money and talking about college is pretty stressful, they don’t really want me to go out of state. Are there a lot of scholarships that I’ll be able to apply for (if I get lucky and get accepted!) and financial aid?

Hi heatherfierce. My daughter was just admitted for Fall 2011 and we attended the admitted students day last week where we given a financial aid presentation. It seems as if general scholarships are not given to freshman, but are reserved for after the freshman year, and I believe they mentioned a 3.3 GPA as a qualifier, which should motivate a student to do well once there. I’m not sure, but financial need may come into play as well with these scholarships.

As far as freshman go, FIT does offer financial aid, based on need. We were only offered loans, but I know of people who received grants. My daughter also received a work study option, which doesn’t get taken off of your tuition, but it does give you a paycheck every two weeks to use for extras, which is nice.

You can read more about scholarships here: [Fashion Institute of Technology - Financial Aid Awards](http://www.fitnyc.edu/3014.asp)

Good luck to you. FIT, although not a traditional college, has so much to offer. And after seeing the enthusiasm of the admitted and current students, I have no doubts that it will be a great atmosphere in which to learn.

Hi,

I am currently graduating with a business degree from a well-known business school, but want to get into the fashion industry. I have been accepted to FIT for FMM through the 1 year AAS program. I want to spend the least amount of additional time in school, so I was thinking of just doing the 1 year AAS program only. Will it be easy to find fashion merchandising jobs with a BS in business and an AAS in FMM, or is it recommended to complete a BS at FIT?

HI im a senior in HS rite now & so i am interested in applying for FIT for spring 2012.
& im thinking about transferring from a cc in California.
I was wondering if i can just do summer/fall 2011 OR if i could ONLY FALL 2011 & then transfer to FIT spring 2012?
i know theres 30 credits to transfer but can i transfer anytime even if i dont have 30 credits before transferring? or is it too short to transfer like that?
& im interested in the visual comm & exhibit design(?) & i wanted to know what you do in that major? & what kind of jobs would yu get out of this major?
Im interested in being maybe a freelance fashion stylist & work for magazines & set up photoshoots & runway shows stuff like that?
What kind of stuff do yu learn & yu mentioned that people intern & stuff in fashion magazines. please tell me more. Thank you!

Also how is dorm life? And student life there? I’m from out of state and idk anybody. I heard ppl go home during the weekends? But I won’t be able to do that… how are the dorms and I’m worried about friends…? Are ppl really that snobbish and cold?

I get the vibe that the school itself is seemingly diverse but in reality I feel like it’s not as diverse as it appears.
So realistically, whats the diversity like?

^ Diversity is nonexistent. It’s pretty much all upper-middle class white girls and homosexuals with the same mindset, or international students(Korean) who are here for the city. Anybody who thinks differently usually ends up transferring somewhere else.

Hello peeps

Having decided to walk away from my law career and follow my passion to a career in shoe design I am intending to run away to NYC from Australia and study the AAD Accessories Design.

I dont have an arts background and have never put together a portfolio before so I have a question for those in the know…

What makes a portfolio stand out from the pack? What is it about the portfolios of successful applicants that clinches the deal?

I have lots of great ideas but delivering a portfolio that does them justice is the challenge!

Thanks in advance :)

THis question is for Hungry Student or any other current FIT students. My daughter will be in a suite style dorm and is therefore not required to have a meal plan. Even though she has lofty goals of cooking her meals every day, I think that may be unrealistic given her work load, work study, and adjusting to college life.

I would like to sign her up for at least some kind of meal plan so that she has something to fall back on (she likes to eat BTW). I was thinking of getting her the declining balance card to have as a backup to cover at least one meal a day, instead of signing up for a meal plan option. Does anyone have experience with how much one would need on a declining balance card in order to cover only one meal/day, 7 days/week, for an entire semester? Is this a good option, or should I get her a meal plan option?

Hey everyone! This question is for anyone who can help me out with it-

I am a Textile Designer from India. I have done Post Graduation in Textile Design. I am keen on studying further from US. I worked for a year as a digital print designer.
Could you please let me know if there is way I can get my portfolio reviewed before the actual submission(since I am in India can’t go for portfolio reviews on National Portfolio Day).
Secondly, since I want to go for Masters and I didnt find many good colleges which provide masters in textile designing I am considering applying for courses like

Art Market: Principles and Practices
Fashion and Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice
(above 2 are courses from FIT)
Industrial Design
Communication Design

Would my probability of being taken in one of the above mentioned courses go down because I have studied and worked in the field of Textiles and prints?
I am in a very confused state of mind.

Eagerly waiting for someone to reply!

Hello! For anyone who can help me:

I am very interested in attending FIT and majoring in one of the Advertising and Communications programs however, I also would like to get a decent liberal arts education. I really would like to get a well rounded education in addition to my major. For those who attend FIT, how is the liberal arts school? Is it taken “seriously” by the students or do the students just pull themselves through it just to get the credits? I also have a fairly high GPA so I just want to make sure that the liberal arts classes would challenge me.

Thanks so much for any replies!

OK, I think it is time to revive this thread!!

Anyone from FIT out there? How about the previous posters on the thread who ended up attending? Is it what you thought? How are you enjoying the year thus far?

Also, can someone give a brief description of the dorms…I noticed that they offer a few options.

Thanks

Hi HungryStudent! I’m currently a junior in High School, from Texas.
FIT has definitely caught my eye, I’m interested in majoring in Graphic Design.
Though the price is probably the lowest in NYC, I’m determined to find a job and save
every paycheck for FIT while my parents help out by only putting around $5,000.
My question is… Is FIT worth all the hard work I’m getting myself into?
I really enjoy the location of course. I dream of landing a job for a fashion magazine as
one of their graphic designers. But I’m really afraid of graduating FIT and turning out jobless.
(I hear a lot of people turn out like this :/.)
I don’t want to go to a regular University here in Texas and regret what would’ve happen if i went to FIT. Though i was thinking of going to college here then moving to NYC
once i receive my degree, The thought of going directly to NYC at FIT really
excites me, Im just not sure what to do?
What do you think? Any Input would be great?
Thanks!

HungryStudent- I was wondering if you knew how difficult transfer admissions are at FIT? I have a 3.5 college GPA and am applying for Fall 2012 as an AMC major. I’m super nervous, FIT is my dream school :))))
