OPEN THREAD: Ask an FIT Student!

NEED HELP HERE!!

I am currently a high school graduate and have just received my exam results lately… I got 2 As 4Bs and 2Cs… I aced my English but I 'C’ed my Maths… What are my chances of getting in the FMM course? I am from Malaysia and they are no GPAs in high school… Besides that can i send in my Ielts result after the supplementary materials deadline? Does International students have a big chance of getting in? If i got rejected this semester is there a chance of getting accepted next time i apply?

I recently applied for FMM fall 2015 but now I’m thinking AMC is the way I want to go. Is it possible to change the major since the deadline is February 1st? I know they don’t like you to change once you’ve started and that’s why I want to get that done as soon as possible

Hi! FIT is my dream school and I just want anyone who goes here to answer my question. I was wondering what my chances were of getting into the school. I dance 5 days a week for a pre professional company and im in a youth group with my church. im a sophomore in highschool and im about to start voluntering at a place for disabled kids and im going to work at my moms non profit in the summer and I will get a retail job starting next school year. as of right now I have a 4.0 GPA and I take alot of art, fashion, and business classes. I will be in national spanish honnors society next year as well. I am also out of state and I want to go into FMM. PLEASE SOMEONE WHO GOES TO THE SCHOOL REPLY

It’s not hard to get accepted. I applied twice and got in. As long as your gpa is good enough I think you have a good shot. I didn’t even write a lot for my essay.

Does taking the high school courses help in getting accepted? Thanks.

Hi @missy21. Colleagues of mine who took the high school courses said it did help, but only very little. If you need something to write about it your essay, it definitely helps since you’ll be apply to talk about your experience and learnings, as to how you can apply it academically at FIT. It also gets your name out there to admissions. Enrolling in a course shows that you are serious about attending and eager to learn. Good luck! :slight_smile:

I’m currently a sophomore in high school and want to pursue a career in fashion merchandising. My GPA this year isn’t great, but next year I’m planning to step it up, and I’m going to take 3 (out of 6) AP classes. I’m not really involved in any extra circulars, but I work at a job outside of school. What else would I need to do to be able to get into FIT? Thanks!

Hi, Can I ask how many applicants get accepted for illustration ASS in FIT? Thanks!

Hello! My name is Abby and i am looking to apply at FIT in the fall if 2016. I am not quite sure whether I would like to do Fashion Design or AMC. In two weeks I am taking a two week college credit course in Fashion Design at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. However, parents are not sure whether I could end up getting a job in fashion design. Do most Fashion Design majors end up getting a good job?? If i took design for my bachelors degree, i would like to do Fashion Styling for my Associates. On the other hand, i also would love to write about Fashion, and at an information session I was told that this would follow along the lines of AMC, which doesn’t make sense to me. Help! I am too indecisive! Which would be easiest to get in to? I have heard Amc is competitive.

They do not look at SAT scores unless you reallly want them too. they arent required.

All the majors at FIT are extremely hard and competitive to get into. I wouldn’t apply to any major thinking it’s easy to be accepted. FIT is a very prestigious school and it’s becoming harder to get into year after year. I will be attending FIT in the fall for FMM. At the accepted students day the president told us that some of the programs are so competitive now that they are only able to accept one in ten applicants. She didn’t say which majors though. :slight_smile: Fashion design and AMC could not be more different. One is design and the other is business. I would take the design class and see where your strengths are. It can be hard to get a design job and there is more money on the business side unless you make it big as a designer but I would consult someone. I’m not going into design so I’m not familiar with the jobs. You need an amazing portfolio for fashion design and strong sewing skills and probably drawing skills as well. For AMC grades are more important and you need an phenomenal essay. AMC is about advertising/marketing but you can tailor it to journalism though the classes you take. However, if you aren’t interesting in advertising/marketing I wouldn’t suggest that route. I hope this helps.

I know I’m a little late to the party, but I toured FIT in June and fell in love with the campus (and the tuition). Going to college in Manhattan was never an option for me because I live in Florida & out of state tuition is normally insane, but FIT has made that possible. I have a 3.5 unweighted GPA (3.8 weighted), a 24 ACT and 1490 SAT (eek!). I started a fashion club at my high school & work as the junior fashion editor for an up and coming bridal magazine. I attend fashion week every season which helped me make contacts with FIT alumni (and someone on the board of trustees). I’m applying for Fall 2016 (AMC) and I’m super nervous about getting in! I’m stressing over writing my essay because it will literally make or break my future at FIT. So if anyone has any helpful insight or can weigh my chances it would be greatly appreciated! :slight_smile:

Hello to everybody! I am an international student and I want to apply in the Fall 2016. I have couple of questions and hope to hear the answers.

  1. I saw two courses on Undergraduate page on the website - Fashion Design Apparel and Fashion Design Art. Are these two different faculties or just two components in one faculty? Maybe, it sounds stupid, but I really didn’t understood.
  2. Do I need to write the essay about myself or only the essay with the topic given on the website?
  3. Is it required to live in campus, or can I just rent a flat (the campus prices are too expensive for me)?
  4. Do I need to pay for the whole year or only for one semester when I apply?

Sorry, if my questions seem stupid, English is not my native language and I don’t get all the information correctly. Thank you.

Hi. I am a high school junior currently interested in attending FIT for the fashion design major. I have a few questions, such as what is the recommended gpa and sat to get in? What high school classes should I take to increase my chances of getting? How do I make my portfolio the best that it can be ? And is it worth it giving up a great college experience and putting my all into this school in hopes of getting a great job in the future? Please, I would really appreciate if someone responded elaborately asap, to help with my decision making. Thank you.

@moname I can’t help you with the first question, as I am applying to be a business major. I can, however help! I’ve been researching FIT for months and toured the school. While I was on the tour, I asked the same questions.

  1. You have to write the essay on the topic given, but make it about yourself! You have to write about why you are interested in the major you are applying to & why you are the perfect candidate for FIT. This is the biggest chance to show off your resume because you can’t submit an actual resume.
  2. You can rent an apartment and commute. Since I am out of state, I will be subleasing an apartment and establishing residency to get in state tuition!
  3. There are different payment options. I am pretty sure you pay by semester though!

@Bonniexx21
-They look at unweighted GPAs above a 3.0, but prefer for them to be a 3.5 or higher. SAT and ACT scores are not required for admission, but they will use them when determining which english/math classes to place you in.
-FIT really encourages taking challenging courses, so try to take honors, AP, IB, Dual enrollment, etc. And since you are interested in the fashion design major, you should definitely take any fashion related courses at your school! I am applying for AMC, but I am a third year design student.
-FIT offers portfolio services all over the country, so you can check and see if they’re coming to a city near you & they can review it! I’m sure if you take a look at their website you can find more information on that.
-Although FIT is certainly not your traditional college and lacks school spirit (from what I hear), Manhattan is still a very fun place! I definitely think it’s worth it, because you’re pretty much guaranteed an amazing job! (You can read more about campus life in this really wonderful article: http://fashionista.com/2012/06/fashion-school-confidential-10-lessons-i-learned-at-fashion-school-so-you-dont-have-to#5).

Thank you so much @hausofemily. Your insight was extremely helpful, and I will make sure to come to you for any further questions.

@Bonniexx21 My pleasure!!

For anyone else who applied: Have you recieved your login info for the MyFIT portal yet?! I applied on July 31st as soon as the applications opened and have yet to receive it.

I was planning on transferring to the fashion institute of technology and I wanted to do a double major of Business Marketing/and apparel design , but I wasn’t sure how I would do this I’m planning on applying to the fashion institutes business school

I applied to the illustration major for fall 2016 back in November, I feel that my portfolio is pretty strong and includes all the categories they ask for in the portfolio requirements, I excel in English so I’m very confident that my essay is strong but the thing is, my grades absolutely suck since I was going through a lot most of my high school years and only just started pulling myself together my junior year, even so, my GPA still doesn’t even meet FIT’s requirements, but I also applied for the EOP. Honestly I have no idea what my chances are at getting in, so I decided that joining this discussion would be a good idea if anyone has an idea what my chances are or just wants to talk about the application process as we all wait in anticipation for our admissions letters

Hi,
I am starting community college in Texas at Austin Community College District in the fall semester. I feel, however, that creativity is what I am passionate about and I want to study at FIT. I have not taken any art courses in high school and so I feel I am not that sound in drawing. Is it still possible for me to get into FIT for menswear? If yes, what courses should I take at community college which will help me towards what I want to do? Also, how is the job market for menswear? If for instance, I get into FIT, does that mean I will land into a job as soon as I graduate?
