Does anyone know if any Division I, II or III teams have open tryouts for varsity tennis? Just curious. I highly doubt i'll play even if there were but... you know, just nice to know.

I’m pretty sure they do, I’ve never done anything like this but if you e-mail the coach, if they have spots for walk-on, you can pretty much get a tryout. I think, don’t quote me on this.

My DII school hosts open tryouts. They’re normally looking for very specific types of players though. I had a friend tryout for softball and they only had them take batting practice, no fielding work. They were only looking for a few good bats.

E mail the coaches at the schools you are interested in. You might also check the schools’ websites…sometimes the schools give short biographies of the players on the various teams. It might give you an idea of the skill level of the players at that school…were they state champs? Do they play on the national circuits? and then you might be able to judge if you are in the ball park for the level of competition the school plays at.

It’s not always necessary to play varsity. One of my sons had a lot of opportunities to play his sport in college but he decided he wanted more of a typical college student experience …he is instead playing on a very high level club team–86 students went out for a team with a roster of 18-20 players. This is something you might consider.

thanks for all the responses. like i stated above, i probably don’t want to play even if there were open tryouts. i’m just wondering in case i change my mind. but i’m definitely looking to club and intramurals.
