Opening a bank account in College Park

So, I'm assuming that Chevy Chase is the best place to do this since they have a branch right in the Stamp? Is this what most students do?

If you just want a convenient place to stash your cash then Chevy Chase is pretty good since yes they have that branch in Stamp.

I myself use PNC though. I’d switch to Citi if I had enough money to avoid their maintenance fees.

Thanks DCH. Why would you use Citi instead? Wouldn’t there be fees at the ATM? Or is there a Citi nearby?

We have accounts at BofA and there is one in College Park, but it doesn’t look to be within walking distance.

Thanks for the input.

There is a BofA near the CVS on rt 1 that is walking distance. If you want to go ahead and set up a Chevy Chase account, wait until you get to College Park in August, as they always have give-aways for new accounts (t-shirts, bags, etc.), and their acounts are free to students.

Thanks for the advice. We were going to set up an account during orientation, but we can always wait.

On another note, is there a more active message board for UMCP parents where I can get some questions answered? (I have some questions about orientation dates, etc.) This board is helpful but not that busy. Thanks!

Yeah there would be fees, I don’t use cash very often though anyway. Citi has a ton of ATMs throughout the US, I like some of their other banking options etc… for instance every 7-Eleven has a Citibank ATM. Bank of America also has a ton of locations, and their ATMs are very nice, but I have had horrible experiences with them as a bank. If you like them you might as well stick with them since yes there is a BofA within walking distance, and they do have quite a few ATMs in DC.

ReadyToRoll: there is a B of A nearby. We set up our son’s account at B of A so that I could make deposits from home (we live in Oregon. No Chevy Chase banks around here). It has worked out well for him - he frequently goes to Route 1 anyway for his job or to grab a bite to eat. There are ATMs on campus, too.

I have a BofA account, but I’ve honestly found that I don’t really use cash much at all anyway. The ATM is off campus, but it’s on Route 1, which is right off of campus. I went to the CVS (in the same little shopping area as the BofA) after one of my classes, and it took me about 8 minutes, from being in my classroom to being in the store. I have never really had a problem with not having a Chevy Chase account.

Chevy Chase has ATMs throughout DC and the suburbs (every metro station has a Chevy Chase ATM) as well as around campus – that was a major plus for me. I switched to Chevy Chase my sophomore year because it was much more convenient. I graduated 2 years ago and still live in the DC area, so I still have my Chevy Chase account. Now that I travel frequently for business I’ve been considering opening a 2nd account at a national bank, but still love the ubiquity of Chevy Chase ATMs around the DC metro area.

I visit this website often: InsideMDSports
This is primarily a message board for Terps sports but there is an off-topic sub-forum. Most of the posters there are current students, alumni, or parents. If you ask a question there I’m sure there will be someone with experience to help you out.
