I'm going to interview with Goldman Sachs Operations division next week, and I just wanted to know more about that division. From their website, I got a feeling that they were like the admin, the back up, or the secretaries of the front runners... any thoughts?

I hope your going into this only if youre not interested in doing Corporate finance for Goldman. If you are the slightest bit interested on working on deals or sales and trading find a firm that will allow you to do this. Please don't get the impression that once you get in it will be easy to move into the intense corporate finance part. I know far too many people that have done this and failed. Goldman sometimes has the balls to change the position you applied for from investment banking to their operations or research side if they deem you less competitive than other applicants. Alot of the operations side of IBs prove to be deadends. Just some stuff to keep in mind, just in case you fit into this.

btw don't get the impression that I m anti GS I ll be having a SA interview with them in a few weeks!

Seriously? Yeah I don't think my GPA is high enough to be considered for an investment banking interview... HARV, you're probably right, they changed the positions I applied to... XD

I'm not that into Corporate finance or investment banking, I'd like to get a job that pays relatively well, with relatively regular hours, so that I have time for my boyfriend and potentially having a family. I too often hear about failed relationships in the i-baking industry, and I'd like to avoid that.

Could you guys tell me what they do in Operations?

Something I was able to skim out was “Goldman ops (not sure about other BBs) is definitely NOT a 9-5 at all.”

This is my opinion but based on what youre looking for I would say get into Big 4 auditing. I was offered prorated 55k for the summer which is still an okay full time wage plus you get 4-5 weeks of vacation your 1st year as a Full Time, no other firms do this! Unfortunately I want to sell myself to the mighty dollar so I m doing IB, but second would def be auditing.

And personally if they switched the position I applied for and gave me an interview for a different one, I would say **** off!

I'm looking to get into S&T or IB at goldman also, but for my school they're only actively recruiting for operations, finance, private wealth management, and also securities (the new S&T i believe). Being only a sophmore, I doubt I'll get into securities but are private wealth manangement and finance also dead ends??

You never know! You should apply regardless. Of course they won't expect you to know too much about technical things related to the job (e.g. using macro to model), but they want to see passion and willingness to learn. What they want is someone who is able to learn what they teach them during the internship.

Attend their career events and network with the people that work there. Send thank you emails to them. Even if you don't get an internship this summer, you'll still be able to get some good networking done! :)

congrats, again, toblerone! according to your other thread about citi, seems like the interview went well. thanks for sharing how that went.

my friend had an interview with goldman ops, last year. she said it was "easy." it's just about yourself (guess it was behavioral/fit). she got through the first round, but did not pass the second round with the more technical questions.

quick question for you -- how did you apply for these positions? did you do it through your school's career recruiting, or did you simply apply online?

i'm also trying out for goldman ops -- they're recruiting at my school. i see ibanks coming to my school to hire only for operations. unfortunately, i heard it all, too -- once you're in ops, you're pretty much stuck and can't transfer into the front office positions.
what's the chance they'll really want an SA who is majoring in something completely different from anything math/science oriented? i'm afraid of all the technical questions...

i submitted so many apps online, but according to the wallstreetoasis forums, that's just pretty much throwing your applications into the trash. makes sense, i guess -- companies would prefer to select people from target schools.

when is the interview? good luck, again! do tell us how the interview goes!

hahaha, you missed the **prorated **55k. Meaning your salary will be equal to 55k if you worked the entire year with the company, but the internship was only 10 weeks so you only get paid for the 10 weeks not the entire year.

fyi......so far I have found the place that pays the most is Bear Sterns for SA around 17k average comp!!! the rest of the street is about 12k.

I made it to the second round interviews for an internship with GS in the operations division. Has anyone been on any of these interviews? Do you know what sort of stuff they ask? I'm very interested.

"Goldman sometimes has the balls to change the position you applied for from investment banking to their operations or research side if they deem you less competitive than other applicants." thats a pretty ridiculous statement to make to say that Research is less competitive than IBD...GIR is front office in case you didnt know! Paid the same as S&T mostly.

In general from my experience when talking to HR and employees the level of competitiveness among applicant goes:
Operations --> Research --> IBD or S&T Depending on the firm.

There might be sometimes when Reserach is on par with IBD and S&T but it is Never better.

And for a firm like GS it goes: Operations --> Research --> S&T --> IBD

I'm not even going to apply for something with IBD until I have my masters. However, I feel that in the mean time, trying to get something in operations would definitely be beneficial.

Anyone know what sort of questions they ask on these interviews?

now i remember why i stopped visiting this site three years ago...

i did a summer analyst at a BB ibd, and am going to start full time

IBD, S&T, and GIR are all front office positions; ibd is not better than s&t nor vice versa. some firms are more known for s&t (like barcap, which doesn't do m&a), whereas others are more known for ibd (ms for example)

to say that at GS, IBD > S&T is outrageous. gs securities is top notch, especially in ficc, and the smartest people at the firm are at the prop desks such as gsps ssg...etc

ibd s&t and research are the three front office positions; no use comparing them

I am goign for the second round of interviews with GS for the position of Summer Operations analyst - Intern. I am pursuing my Masters Degree in Information Management, and I do not have a formal finance background.

I just wanted to know what kind of questions can I expect in the second round interviews.

It would be great if any of you guys could help me.

however, ggkini, when did you hear back after your first round about your invitation to the gs superday?

i always hear that those who get second rounds would get a reply asap. i recently had my first round for ops SA position...companies always say about "two weeks," but i'm guessing those who were really liked would hear back really quick?
