Operations Internship at Goldman Sachs

Hi arcad,

Well my 1 st round of interviews happend on 11th Feb 2008, and I got a reply from GS in 4 days.. i.e on the 15th of Feb. I hope you do get that call for the second round of interviews.
All the best!!

thanks a lot, ggkini! i wish you the best of luck, as well!

i know a girl who went through the second round; i'm going to see if i could get in touch with her...i do recall her saying that it's harder than first round (whatever that really means). maybe they'll ask technical questions? if so, it shouldn't be too much...

do tell us how it goes...when is it?

hey
do u guys know if they send out rejection emails before sending out acceptance emails? how does it work out? I just interviewed for GS ops Summer analyst. They told us to wait a week but someone said he/she already found out he got rejected.

hey! can u ask her if she got the acceptance email/phone call immediately or did they take a week?
also, do they send out rejection emails firsT?

Maybe this helps.....I interviewed in the final round of GS ops, and despite feeling confident that my interview was successful, I received an email roughly 1.5 weeks later saying that I did not get the position......

How many people do u think compete for the same division? This other guy from my uni interviewed with the exact same people as me and got a reject on friday. is this a good sign? I still havent heard anything though

I interviewed as well on Friday. Everyone was really nice, typical questions, amazing office, they said you'll get a response in 1-2 weeks, either as a phone call or e-mail, and theyll notify you either way--rejection or acceptance.

I'll post a full description of what to expect if/when I get some response.

Which divs. did u interview with in ops? I agree the questions etc. were typical but its hard to say waht they want. Lets see. Will post the decision on here too.

orkut, wegmanstuna, and jay,

did you guys have to wait a while to receive a response after the first round?
i know they say the wait time should be a week or two, but as i have stated above, it seems like people who are accepted to superdays generally receive a response very quick.

thanks for keeping everyone updated about the final round.

and what exactly were these "typical" questions? fit?

I received my invitation to Super Day two days after my first round via e-mail. Like literally 48 hours after. And, yes, 75% of my interview was fit, the other 25% was only because I interned at an investment bank before, so they wanted to hear about it.

if you interviewed at an investment bank before, was it also ops? if you got an offer to return at your other bank, i would take it even if it is a no-name than do operations at GS. theres a huge difference between front office positions and back office regarding teh things you learn

it wasn't ops, ibd analyst, it was small but they had some really interesting international acquisitions with grain terminals in africa and real estate projects in dubai, so it was fun. i got called back but i'm looking for a top-tier internship with formal training, though. back office ops is fine as for now, especially if it's with goldman. i'm only in undergrad so i have plenty of time for growth and networking if i feel it's not a good fit later. i shouldn't be talking right now though because i have no idea whether or not i even got accepted. i know of one extremely strong candidate who got into trading @ merrill but couldn't get into ops @ goldman from my school, so who knows.

So here is all I can remember about the questions:
1. Tell me something about yourself and how you did you become interested in goldman sachs

Tell me about a challenging situation that you have faced in your life and how u were able to overcome it?

Are u an influential person?

I can normally tell when I see a person whether they really want this or not. I see ur smart up there but I am not clearly seeing it on the resume. convince me

Why do u want ops? what do u think it entails?

What client relationship experience have u had so far?

Suppose the intern who is working with you is having difficulty coping up with the training material, how would u help him? ( i got this because of my tutoring experience)

What questions do u have for me?

Oh I didnt get it btw, it was an eat **** and die kinda response email. sob sob!

orkut: did you get that e-mail today? when did you interview? i interviewed 2/22. if possible can you please copy and paste the e-mail?

i'm sorry to hear that you didn't get the position, you seem like an intelligent individual. i'm sure you'll get other positions though.

questions that i've gotten with gs:

nearly everybody was asked this question for every division: name somebody who you think would be a good world leader.

what was your biggest challenge?

strength? weakness?

what motivates you?

name a time when you took a leadership role -- i was asked this like 10 times

why goldman, and why ops -- asked over and over

those were the questions that stuck out, and after going through four different people on separate days i just don't remember everything.

I'm in the same boat as Orkut. Unfortunately, I was rejected on Monday as well. Some of the questions from the interview that I could remember are:

1) Why GS and why Ops?

2) Tell me about a time where you took initiative when you didn't have to.

3) Tell me about a time where a team member for a project did not hold to his responsibilities. How did you handle this?

4) If I talked your coach, what would he say is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness?

5) Tell me about a time where you had a short deadline and how did you deal with this?

6) Tell me about yourself.

That's all I can remember for now (sorry guys). In any case Jay you still haven't heard back as yet? Maybe thats a good sign. Good Luck!

Out of curiosity what divisions in Ops did you guys interview for?

I interviewed with:
Commodities
Securities
Prime Brokerage

I hope you're right Mike. 4 days now, no reply.

And you interviewed with a specific division? I'll go into detail what I went through after I get some sort've decision. Can you copy+paste the e-mail you received Mike? Thanks in advance.

Also, did you interview 2/22 as well?

I actually interviewed on 2/20 which could explain why I (and possibly Orkut) received our lovely rejections :( (Now my hope turns to JP morgan!) in any case I will get the email and paste in a few

sorry to hear about the rejections...hopefully you guys have other interviews/offers?

thanks so much for sharing those interview questions...i have second round this friday, and i just got the notice. i have absolutely no time to prepare, seeing as how i have assignments/tests for tomorrow.

did they ask any technical questions?

how did the rest of you prepare? i mean, there are so many diverse questions about teamwork...
also, i haven't been keeping up with the current news...will they ask about the markets?

hey aracad
they didnt really ask about any market related questions. Makes me feel bad for all those anti social applicants who sat in the waiting room with their heads buried in the WSJ.
I think you could look up basic stuff like the how the share price etc is doing. also any operations related news, I think i found something about GS investing in the market liquidity information provider trimtabs. But they didnt ask anything.

Regardless of what question they ask i think their underlying motive is to find out whether you can build consensus in your team and are not a soloist. so just answer anything they ask with that in mind, I guess.
