Ok guys, I cannot take it anymore. I applied to The Ohio State University's graduate program in Operations Research--my application was completed late March. My application was turned in by the application deadline but my supplemental materials(ie: GRE, letter of rec.) were somewhat late I must know will they let me in or did I apply to late and am SOL.

Here is the pertinent data:

GRE SCORES: Q-730 V-560 Analytical-3.5-----I fear this is a deal breaker since they say
they MAY refuse admission to anyone who does not get >= 4.5 on the
analytical.

EDUCATION: BA Mathematics(3.26 overall); No research; letters of rec. OK.

Experience: Currently teaching high school mathematics; have been teaching for two years
now. Iraq vet. I really want to go to The OSU because their program is in the
top 30 and Ohio allows veterans to pay instate tuition even if they are not
residents. I am ready to leave California and I have never been to the Great
Lake region.

There you have it. Do I have a snowball's chance in hell??? This is the only school I applied to. All or nothing. Please Advise.

From now on, everyone who views this thread MUST offer some response. Final. End of discussion. Nonnegotiable.

Badjuju,

I’ll comment since I looked. First of all, thanks for your service to our country.

Second, you have an interesting history that reminds me of my ex’s and I know how his path turned out. He was active duty for 12 years during the first Gulf War before he got out and went to school.

He was in the Air National Guard for another 10 years while completing his Bachelor’s in Operations Management and when I say he had to start at the beginning math wise, I am not exaggerating. Like day one, pre-Algebra remedial as it has been since a long time since he had HS Math. He went through College Calc II.

He just finished his MBA a couple of years ago in Organizational Planning and Strategic Behavior.

You definitely fall into the category of a non-traditional track so it’s sometimes hard to gauge how admissions will view that.

I am a graduate of Ohio State and I know plenty of people who have done Master’s level and Ph.D. work there and they are above average intelligence wise but certainly not rocket scientists (well one is).

Your work ethic and history can only work in your favor, how they will judge your specific scores, I can’t say as I don’t know the field so much.

As far as living in the Midwest/Great Lakes region, it’s like San Diego in the Spring, Palm Springs in the Summer, Big Bear in the Fall, and Antarctica in the Winter (just kidding, not that bad but it can get to -20 below with the wind chill.)

Is it Rolling Admissions and do you have any idea how long until you find out? Good luck with everything.

Thanks Mama. What are Rolling Admissions? I don’t have any idea when I might get a final decision; I am tempted to email them and ask when I might hear something but I don’t want to be a bugaboo–I have contacted them once already to make sure my application is complete. Would it be ok for me to contact them via email or should I use a land-line? So many questions and so few answers. Damn.

Juju,

Rolling admissions means they accept applicants every quarter or semester vs. just once a year.

It probably wouldn’t hurt to make a call and find out if they will have a drop dead decision date or whether or not they will be scheduling interviews, etc. I would say higher education types like to have their ego’s stroked. I would ask who would be the best person to talk to about your specific interest area and even fire off an email to them. Do you have any idea how big the program is or any more specifics about acceptance rates, etc?

Update: I did not get in. Life sucks then you get a state job and try again next year. God speed.
