does anyone know anything about this major? it seems kinda like a really interesting combination of math and economics and since Berkeley doesn't have a math/econ program like LA or SD it seems like a good compromise.

It is incredibly hard to get into. Only 25 students are admitted a year into the major with 50+ students on the waitlist. In addition to the stiff competition, the prereq courses aren't exactly easier either-- you have to take the engineering physics and math series.

I'm sure that OR majors know that they need math.

according to this the transfer rate is 63% and i'm not really worried about the math classes since i originally planned on double majoring in applied math and econ. would ORMS be easier to get into than econ?

Also according to assist there is no physics requirement at all. In fact the only requirements are econ and math classes along with a intro programming course.

wow i didnt know they have that major before... damn it...>.<

i would have chosen that major if i knew that major exist at berk

bump, anyone know someone that has transferred into ORMS or any sort of gpa/stats?

I guess if you did graduate courses, it'd be like a MS in OR, but otherwise, it's kind of like a pre-degree; it's probably easier to just go math and then get an MS in Operations Research.

the ms is management science not a degree

It's not as though you're going to Hass, no?

A math degree will prepare you more for further studies in economics than a econ degree.

well what i'm asking is since i'm a transfer student would it be easier for me to get in as applied math and declare Operations research and management science(ORMS) as a 2nd major or would it be easier to apply directly to ORMS since it has a 63% acceptance rate and then declare applied math as a 2nd major.

There really isn't any "easy to get in" major, because everyone thinks that just because it had a high acceptance rate, it means that it's easy to get into. Do you know the GPA of accepted/denied ORMS students?

no i dont know the gpas thats kind of why i asked if anyone knew any information. I'll have a ~3.8 gpa with half of my coursework completed at a UC, if that even means anything, and i'm just looking for the safest route since I'd be happy with either majors.

That's amazing. 63% acceptance rate into ORMS through CCC transfers. I wonder why people even bother going to Berkeley straight out of high school just to get weeded out by all the classes here.

I don't know what transfer stats are for ORMS, but I know the stats are high for continuing students. The few kids (admitted as freshman) I know in the major have around 3.8's.

Transfer students are always at a massive disadvantage since they're restricted to lower level, useless courses for their preparation.

3.8 W is cake.

i think he meant 3.8 gpa in college since you'd have to complete all the pre reqs to be admitted to the major if you got in as a freshman.
