My son is seriously considering Redlands for Fall 2010. The campus is beautiful and we liked the programs, administrators, etc. However, I have a big concern about crime in the area. I would love to get a current student opinion about the feeling of safety, both on and off campus. Any current info would be appreciated!

mom, here is the Dept. of Education’s report on Redlands:

[Campus Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool Website](Campus Safety and Security)

Thanks for the link. I had only seen general city data, and not that of the campus, so this was very helpful.

I found the link very interesting too, especially comparing the number of burglaries at Redlands vs the same number at the large CSU that my older son attends. Redlands didn’t compare very favorably. I’ve told my younger son to be aware of this when he gets to campus next fall.

I couldn’t open the file. I have checked in the past and noticed that Redlands campus security/student life is very good at reporting everything. When I oompared alcohol use at USC (ca) the data showed SC having less Incidents than Redlands.percents. By size alone I didn’t believe the #'s. Redlands reports everythng it seems. See if you can bring up the bullsheet. (I think that’s what it’s called). Every scrape and stumble appears if the student goes to student health. I also think students know that the university cares if there is any crime. I know some students at cal stateswho just don’t think it is worth reporting small crime. But any place --students need to be aware. Students often don’t think anything bad will happen.

I live in redlands, really close to U of R and the area is a heck alot better than my old area San Bernardino. U of R is close to the high school and the major freeway therefore, it is not all isolated. Honestly, compared to the Inland Empire, Redlands is one of the favorably looked upon cities in the IE.

I think your comparision to the rest of the inland empire is the key - yes, it’s better, but it’s the best of the worst. We chose another school, 90% due to the whole crime ridden area. You can get crime stats for Redlands, separate from the campus, which wouldn’t be skewed by reporting differences.

That is really interesting. My Daughter just recently chose Redlands. We are from the area and one of the reasons she chose it over the other schools she was considering is due to the safety of the campus and the Redlands area. I don’t know that statistics but I have lived in many cities over my lifetime, and Redlands is not a high crime city.

Our daughter is graduating from Redlands this year. Her major is Communicative Disorders. We had no problem during her four years with crime. BUT… now in her senior year when it counts the most we find the ComDis department extremely lacking in guidance and advice for her. You may want to check the job placement success and career guidance areas of whatever major he is interested in.

Reddad,
I understand that you are disappointed with the career counseling services, but can you tell me about the safety of the campus? Did your daughter live on campus all four years? Do you consider the campus and surrounding area a safe one?
