Opinion about the 'Eastern Michigan University'

Hi,

I have been admitted to the Masters (MS) in 'Apparel, Textile, Merchandising' (ATM) Course starting from Fall 2008 in the 'Eastern Michigan University', Ypsilanti, Michigan - Eastern Michigan University

However, I am not sure about the status (recognised) and reputation of this university, from the research carried out by me on the internet.

Thus, request you all to please provide any guidance regarding the position of this university in USA, the quality of classes conducted there and job prospects after completing education from this university.

Your help and guidance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Regards and Thanks,

P.S. - I am an international student from New Delhi, India.

I do not know anything about your intended program at Eastern Michigan, but I do know the school and the area. Have you been admitted to any other schools so I could compare? Two students from our high school are attending there in the fall, one will be on the baseball team. Two students attended last year, but one of those students didn't like it so will transfer this year. She said the students were very different than students from our area. I think that's a good thing. My husband got his MBA there years ago and we live 45 minutes away. The area is not the best, but it is near Ann Arbor, a great college town. I believe EMU has a lot of foreign students, which I'm sure you'd appreciate.

EMU is one of the top producers of teachers in the U.S.

It is at best a second tier public university. Even in Michigan, it is much overshadowed by several other public and private universities. Outside of Michigan, it is hardly known.

It is hard for me to imagine that attending EMU would confer any advantage to you unless you plan to make Michigan your permanent home.

Other than being an easy drive from Ann Arbor, one of the country's most highly regarded college towns, Ypsilanti has little going for it.

I suggest that you contact the career placement office at EMU to find out what kind of jobs students get at graduation. You also can e-mail the department that you're planning to enter.

Virat: EMU does not have an above average reputation as a whole. Now specifically, you should research how its MS in ATM is viewed by others in the field and in the industry. Search for forums where those who have achieved that degree communicate and just ask that advice. I would also consider trying to speak with potential employers of MS degree holders in ATM and see how they view EMU (versus other schools). Without knowing more, it seems that the degree would assist someone in the retail merchandising field -- I wonder how much more an MS confers than someone who just really shows lots of talent working for a reputable company. Good luck to you

Thanks everyone. Currently I am taking my time to decide about this University and I do hope that I reach at a fair conclusion.

By the way, what is your opinion about the Oklahome State University as I have applied in the same and still waiting for an acceptance.

Thanks,

Eastern is a better university, imo. Wayne State’s location in Detroit just throws me off. Otherwise, it’s a great school as well. All in all, I would say you go to Wayne State because of your major.

chancy: Glad you want to help but you should note the original post’s date. July 2008. This person has probably graduated already.
